Uckfield baptism look up please
« on: Monday 28 May 07 20:37 BST (UK) »
Hi all.

I'm looking for the baptism info for George Mew born c1811 Uckfield.
He gives this on census returns 1841-61 & I'd like to find who his parents were.

Thank you in advance

Hi
Uckfield parish is not on the IGI as far as I know therefore you may have to get the film and search it at your nearest LDS centre.   Another way might be to get his marriage certificate as that will give his father's name.  There is a marriage in 1838 on FreeBMD which might be him.

The Sussex OPC site has a partial transcript of Uckfield's Holy Cross Church, 1800 - 1813.  George Mew isn't included, but the transcriber's email address is given - he might do a lookup if you ask him.

Hi, sorry to open this one again. I have the same query about George's parentage and wonder if the question was ever resolved? My ancestor is Richard Mew (born about 1814) who i take to be George's brother.

Hi,

I have had a look at the SFHG transcripts for Uckfield but neither George nor Richard appear on them. There are other 'Mew' families though.

Having stumbled upon this thread while I was rummaging about in Uckfield ... and just in case it's still an issue.

For what it's worth ...
- There's a "Tingley Spencer" on the same Vol. 7, Page 707 of the Uckfield marriages as George Mew.  Date: 1838 Q4
- FamilySearch shows a George Mew marrying a "Hannah Tingley Spencer" in Fletching, Sussex in 1838.  Groom's father: Thomas Mew.  (Source film# 1067171)   "Hannah" would be right, according to the censuses, but I can't vouch for the source, here.
- The SFHG records show a George Mew being buried in Uckfield (Holy Cross) on Nov.1, 1864, at the age of 51 (not _quite_ right, if George wasn't lying about his age)
The baptisms of their five children are easily findable, showing George (the blacksmith) and Hannah as the parents.

Well, Phil, you've done me a great service here - not so much with baptism & marriage but death!!

Checking out FreeBMD Q4 1864 Uckfield drew a blank - because it was transcribed JOHN. Sent in a correction for that, and i'll order the certificate right away.

I've done a load more work on the Sussex Mews since my original post. Anyone wanting a detailed dialogue can contact me on paul AT dbnut DOT com.

Doorwoman: did you get what you wanted? I'm now 99% sure that (your) George & (my) Richard were brothers, sons of Thomas Mew & Sarah Pollard. George's marriage certificate to Hannah confirms father Thomas, Labourer. Can't lay my hands on Richard's marriage cert as he married in Australia.

BTW Phil, there may have been other children to George & Hannah - the "complete" list would run Thomas (1841), Louisa (1843), Jane (1845), George (1848), James (1850), William (1853), Benjamin (1856), Harriet (1859). EXCEPT the last 3 contradict my reading that mother Hannah died in 1852. Oh Dear! More certificates needed.
