Wright family - local knowledge needed
« on: Monday 28 May 07 09:29 BST (UK) »
I have need of help with my ancestor Joseph Wright born c1854.  In 1881 and 1871 census his birthplace is given as Oakthorpe but in 1901 census it is given as Ripley Derbyshire.  As far as I can gather if he is the son of William and Mary born in Oakthorpe as I suspect, one of his brothers is also stated on 1901 census as being born at Ripley although all previous census say he was born Burchwood Lane, Derbyshire.  This really is a teaser!   I cannot find a marriage record for Joseph although the 1891 and 1901 census states he is married to Mary Jane (Wileman) I don't think they were actually married because her burial is under her maiden name.  With no marriage certificate I cannot confirm he is Joseph Wright of Oakthorpe.

Any ideas on this would be gratefully received

Thanks

Thanks, yes this is my lot.  I have the original thanks what I didn't realise is that Ripley was close to Oakthorpe, on the maps I have looked at it is much further north.   Thanks for that.

I think you'll find it's called Oakerthorpe now.

It's about 4 miles away from Ripley.

Thank you, I didn't know there was an Oakerthorpe.  I had presumed he was born Oakthorpe near Measham as that is where he is living from 1881 to his death in 1940.

Now I have another puzzle.  Was he born in Oakerthorpe or did the 1901 census taker hear Oakerthorpe instead of Oakthorpe and perhaps knew the area so put down Ripley?

Any thoughts would be gratefully received.   If he is from the family I think he is from then they were living in Stretton en le field pre 1881 which is closer to Oakthorpe and Joseph's brother Andrew was also put down mistakenly as being born in Ripley in the 1901 census.

Or am I going maaaad???????????

Just to add another fly in the ointment...there is also a Stretton quite near by...and having googled it...http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/DBY/StrettonenleField/index.html
it is in Derbyshire, but not the one I was thinking of!

On that link you will find both Measham and oakthorpe mentioned...so I think it is Oakthope you want!
