Mouat Family
« on: Monday 06 December 04 03:14 GMT (UK) »
Has anyone any information regarding the MOUAT family
Thomas James, Jessie Bryden (nee Thomson), James, William, John Thomas & Jessie Catherine who lived in Leith after leaving Shetland between 1871 & 1881?
William Mouat(my Grandfather) lived in England & I have found a marriage for John Mowat (Mouat) in Lambert, Stirling.  His occupation is shown as "asylum Attendant".
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Other than my branch of the Mouat family (Many of which live in British Columbia of Canada), I don't know a great deal about our family.  My uncle, William Ivan Mouat, is detailed a bit on a page showing his WW2 papers (mainly German POW stuff, since he was shot down there in WW2, but survived and still lives to this day on Salt Spring Island in BC).  http://web.mala.bc.ca/davies/letters.images/Mouat/Mouat.collection.htm

I am William Mouat, son of Oliver Mouat, who is the brother of Garet Mouat, both of which are the sons of Oliver Mouat, who is the brother of William Ivan Mouat.

I am not greatly educated on our family's history, other than the fact that when we "left" Scotland, large portions went to Australia and Canada.  I myself am American.

If you really want more information I can get ahold of my cousin Mary Mouat, who is the family historian.

Thanks for the reply.  I have quite a lot of info re my own Mouats which I would be happy to share with you or your family but I do not think there is a direct connection as none of the names match any of mine although the Shetlanders seem to use the same forenames over & over.

I have Mowet's from 1600's from Midlothian and also one Violet Mouat - no date of birth or parents names. All I have is her husband's date of birth and then her children. Violet married Patrick Horsburgh in 1703 in Prestonpans East Lothian

Patrick was born 1677 so she will have been around that time

Greetings Cousin William.  Thomas William Mouat was born Dec 2/1853, and Jane (Manson) Mouat was born Sept 24/1859.  They married in 1882 and Emmigrated from Shetland to North America, stopping first in Spokane (where Thomas' brother Gavin lived), in 1884.  Later they settled on Salt Spring Island.
Relatives of both Thomas and Jane (Mansons and Mouats) settled in various locations in the west coast area of both US and Canada. Jane was born in Sandwick, and I don't recall where Thomas was born.

Margthwa, forenames in our branch of the family tend to include Thomas, William, Gilbert, Gavin, Jessie, Mary, Laurence, Jane.  Jane Mouat's parents were William and Janet (Ramsey) Manson.  She was eldest of 4, with sisters Barbara and Margaret, and brother William.
