GALLAGHER/O'HARA
« on: Wednesday 23 May 07 16:17 BST (UK) »
Hi folks, I'm new to rootschat and it's the first time I'm joined a messaging forum.

Am searching for Thomas GALLAGHER and his wife Mary O"HARA both of Achill Island.

They emigrated to England 1840s/1850s but don't know where to.

Any tips on how to get started would be very welcome.

Eagleeye,

Ancestry has the English census of 1851 with Thomas Gallagher aged 23 from Mayo in Ireland, living with his family at 72 Chapel Lane, Horton in Bradford.

Living next door in No. 70 is Mary O'Hara aged 11, also from Mayo and living with all of her family.

Do you think this might be them?

Looking at Griffiths Valuation 1847-1864 for Achill Island and there are Gallaghers everywhere!
186 hits, probably many duplications but still..........

There is only one O'Hara and that is Mary O'Hara of Tondregee East. I would think it very likely that she is related to the O'Hara family that moved to England if they were from Achill.

Hi RonnieG,

Thanks very much for that info.  I know what you mean by Gallaghers everywhere.  Gallagher and O'Hara are such common Irish names.  Am going get the marriage cert as it could well be them, that will be the only way of finding out.  Have tried to access Ancestry before but always get a message that the website may not be secure so have not entered.  Will check out the Griffiths Valuation entry for O'Hara.

Thanks again for your help.  At least I've got an idea where to start.

www.ancestry.co.uk is a very reputable site - you'll have no problems there. However it is subscription only to look at census returns.

Hi EagleEye

I have looked Mary up on the 1851 cenus as detailed below and she is 24yrs old, born in 1827. I was interested because I have O'Haras in my family tree living in Horton and later Bowling, Bradford during a similar period of time. Information is listed below.

Happy Hunting,
Trilobite.

Thanks for that Trilobite.

Will bear it in mind but will wait for marriage cert before I go any further.

I just came across your post and thought it was worth droping you a note.
I am researching the O'hara's from Achill from Tonragee and wondered if you had any other info - I have James O'hara and his son also James and his sister Bridget who married Patrick Gannon - I have a lot more work to do with this family but would be interested to know if you had any area of Achill the family might originate - it is not that big an area.
let me know if you think there are any connex.
cheers

christine.
