Birth c 1890 in Lehigh, Webster County, Iowa.
« on: Wednesday 23 May 07 13:05 BST (UK) »
I am looking for birth details for Hugh Lester born c 1890 Lehigh, Webster County, Iowa. son of Jonathon and Martha Lester, both born Lancashire, England.

Hugh had an elder sister born c 1888 'in American waters'!

Would like to find details of this family's arrival in America 1888/1889, also their departure from America.

I have found the family back in England on the British 1891 census.

http://www.idph.state.ia.us/eh/vital_records_info.asp - info on Iowa birth certificates.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~iawebste/webgenso.htm - or try the Webster County Genealogical Society.

Can't spot the family on castlegarden.org, perhaps you could try using alternative spellings.

I can't see them either on Castle Garden on any ship but you know I'd bet a sum of money they were on the Adriatic since that is the name given to Hugh's sister.  Do you have any idea what the initials A. O. stood for in her name?  You don't happen to know a more exact date of birth for her?  The Adriatic was on a regular run to NY during this time frame.  All the voyages between 1887 and 1889 are found microfilmed as follow below but I think Castle Garden has all of them indexed online.    Were there any Lester family members in the US or Iowa when they arrived?  Oddly enough there is an arrival of a Miss A.O. Lester age 20 in about 1887 who was a US citizen.  The early passenger lists unfortunately don't give final destinations.

At this point very much still a mystery.  A pity too that the US 1890 census was destroyed and there are no emgration records for the US...only incoming ones.

Best wishes

Jorose - I have now sent emails to the two addresses you gave.

Jean - re people entering America - do you have website details where I can perhaps trace this Lester family?

I have searched the castlegarden site using variations of the surname etc. without success :'(

Hi Glennys

I wish I did!  The reasons why I asked further questions on details of Hugh's sister is to try and pinpoint what month and year they likely arrived.  Then to confirm if all the passenger lists for the Adriactic are extant and indexed for this time frame.  It's possible the one you want is missing..or perhaps can be found elsewhere through NARA but not online at Castle Garden or Ancestry yet.... but I've never undertaken that level of immigration research.  I believe you can request research from NARA but I believe you have to know quite a few details first.  Not sure exactly how this process might work.  I think also that some passenger films might be available through your FHC or certainly must be held at SLC but again....not familiar with the process.  Perhaps someone else will come to your assistance with more info!

Best wishes
Jean

Do you have any idea what the initials A. O. stood for in her name?

Presumably she is the 25 yr old spinster/servant with the splendid name of Adriatic Atlantic Ocean LESTER who sailed from Liverpool to New York on the Celtic, arriving on 30 March 1913.  Her next of kin was named as "Mother: Martha Lester, 30 Decher (?) St, Sutton St. Helens,   Lancs".  Final destination was Bridgeport, Conn, where she was joining her brother Jno. Lester of 79 Orange (or Grange?) St, Bridgeport.  Her birthplace was given as "Born on board SS Adriatic".  She said she was previously in the US in 1897 in Webster.

Edited to add: the manifest for this voyage can be viewed free at www.ellisisland.org

Following on from the above, there is also an outward passenger list for the same voyage at www.findmypast.com - credits required to view it.  It will be different from the passenger manifest and will most likely contain less detail, though there may be information on there which does not appear on the manifest.

She's indexed here as Adrentic A.O. Lester.
