1891
RG12/1887 19 14
Chilton Upon Polden, Somerset
Farm House

Jane Grant, head, wid, 60, living on own means, b. Catcott
Gilbert Grant, son, s, 20, Agricultural Labourer, b. Edington
Wallace Norris, cousin, mar, 23, Agricultural labourer, b. do.
Eliz Norris, cousin, mar, 25, b. Shapwick

I can see a marriage Wallace Norris - Eliza Norris in March quarter 1891, Bristol, but I can't see a matching Eliza Norris earlier. Maybe he was widowed? (Or it's just not the right marriage)

1881 Wallace is a Farm servant

Dear Sue

My husband’s Grandmother was Mary Whitcombe and she was born in Meare. There are dozens of Whitcombe, Witcombe and various spellings through out the villages and as I live close to the records office in Taunton they were a challenge for me!

6     Joseph Witcombe was baptised at Shapwick 13 Feb 1829. He married Jane Hucker in the Bridgwater Reg Dist between April and July 1855. I would imagine that they married in Shapwick as this was where they both came from. Jane's parents were Henry Hucker a farm labourer born abt 1806 and Maria born abt 1810  (from the 1851 census) both at Othery.

Joseph, Jane and family were living at St Anns Logde Burnham on Sea in 1861, Joseph was a labourer/gardner. By 1871 they were back at Shapwick. They had the following children…

Mary Ann Witcombe baptised at Shapwick 4 May 1856

George Witcombe baptised at Shapwich 23 May 1858, although the census do give his place of birth as Burnham

Charlotte aged 1 month at the time of the 1861 census, born at Burnham

Albert b 1863 at Shapwick, his death was registered in the Bristol Reg Dist 1902

Eliza b 1866 Shapwick

William b 1867 Shapwick

Anna Maria born June Q 1870 died March Q 1874

Elizabeth b 1873 Shapwick

Joseph Witcombe was buried at Shapwick 27 Feb 1892.

5     Joseph was the son of James Witcombe born in Shapwick abt 1801 and died in 1879. He married Charlotte Davis at Shapwich 15 April 1828. She died in 1848

Children…all born at Shapwick
Elizabeth 1834
William b 1836
Sophie bp 31 July 1841
Maria bp 22 Jan 1843
James bp 19 April 1846

4   James was the son of James Witcombe and Mary Young

Groom James Witcomb status – of otp, – Bride Mary Young status – of otp, – married on 23 Oct 1786 at parish Shapwick by banns

3   James Witcombe was the son of James Witcombe born abt 1764 and Mary Dowden

2   James was the son of John Witcombe b 1741 and died 1769, his wife was Betty unknown

1             John was the son of John Witcombe who died at Compton Dundon in 1765

Most of the earlier records were researched by Steve Whitcombe who my husband was at school with. The baptism dates come from the parish records. The family came from Compton Dundon as far as we have gone back. Many of them are on my family tree on Ancestry.com. Hope this makes sense!

There is a group for the Witcombe family at

 http://uk.groups.yahoo.com/group/witcombe/

Best wishes Heather

ps Sorry if you have received this twice, not sure if you receive a thread from a completed look up!
