I'm fairly sure that the place you are talking about was Gateforth Hospital - I know that was an isolation hospital and it's not far from Brayton. It was actually called the Leeds Sanatorium for Consumptives and was built in 1901.

http://www.institutions.org.uk/pictures/sanatoria/leeds_sanatorium.htm

I can remember visiting someone there around 1970 by which time it was not being used for TB patients but for other chest problems eg Lung Cancer

Multimap reference is here...      http://www.multimap.com/maps/#t=l&map=53.75194,-1.15036|13|4&loc=GB:53.75194:-1.15036:14|gateforth|Gateforth,%20YO8%209

Hope this helps!

just a thought, could your father have said that his mum (your grandmother) worked at the Isolation Hospital in Brayton, rather then Brayton Isolation Hosptial  that would cover the other hopsitals inthe area too.

amis from memory the only airfield i knew of around that area was church fenton,
http://www.rafchurchfenton.org.uk/index2.htm
it is about 4/5 miles from gateforth and brayton.
there could of been some temporary ones dotted aroud its a very flat landscape but iv never seen any remains of any.
i will bve staying in gateforth next month so if you would like some pics of the place i will try and get some.
toni, brayton was a small village it didnt have hospitals in its area. in my opinion and i could be wrong but if you had an isolation hospital which did have a lot of grounds you wouldnt put another one temporary or not anywhere else but where there was allready one and you had all the staff in one place and isolated from other people

Thank you Toni, Perth Tiger & Haster for the information so far.

I have managed to talk with my uncle (the eldest of the children), and he believes it was Gateforth Isolation Hospital, and that the slight confusion from my father was because my grandmother used to walk there from Selby, and used to pass Brayton Barff.

It has also been confirmed that my grandfather was stationed at RAF Churchfenton at one point during the war, so that must be how they met.

If you do get a chance to take photographs Perth Tiger, I would appreciate it, as I haven't been near Selby for a few years now (4 1/2 hour drive from here).

I'm in Selby, Brayton over our garden fence - Happy to take any local photos that you might like ;)
Also, there's a chap at the local paper, by the name of Moody, who is a real font of all knowledge as far as Brayton is concerned - it might be worth emailing him :  http://www.selbytoday.co.uk/contactus.aspx

Hi Itch2stitch,

Any photographs would be appreciated, as I don't know when I'll next be able to get to Selby to see my relatives (it's been a few years), and it's a 4 1/2 hour drive from here.

My Grandmother was living in 17 Powell Street, Selby (the family home) at the time of her marriage in 1943, and my Great Grandfather worked at the Oil & Cake Mills as a blacksmith at that time.

Regards
Paul
