Ger,

Looking at Griffiths Valuation 1847-1864 on www.originsnetwork.com I can find quite a few Salmons living in Galway but definitely none in Ballinasloe.

Between lessors and lessees I get 30 hits but some have more than one entry so the actual number is about 24.

Also there is none with the first name Martin so he may have been named after somone on his mother's side.

Hi Ronnieg,
Do you think it is possible that there was Salmon farmers in Ballinasloe without being listed in Griffiths Valuation, i checked out Ballinasloe websites and there is Salmons living there today and even a Salmons department store on the main street ,i also remember my grandmother telling me (I don't know if it is true or not)that Joe Salmon the famous Galway hurler was related and i only recently found out that he is from Ballinasloe.I appreciate your advice on this matter Ronnie as i am no expert.

Ger,

It is entirely possible that they were farming land but not recorded as such.

Tenants of land would not have an entitlement to permanent occupation. Sometimes it would just be for a set number of years, the lifetime of that tenant or perhaps three lives. The latter had advantages to the landlord as the tenant would be more likely to develop the land and buildings knowing that following generations could have use of it whilst the landlords asset was being improved or maintained in value.

The name of the tenancy would remain the same even though other younger family members would be working the land.

There were a relatively small number of Salmons living in the area and I would think its likely that many of them were related to each other in some way.

A look at the parish record for the area would be very valuable to you in sorting out who is related to who.

Ger,

It's possible - but impossible to be sure.

I have a fuzzy link in my own tree where I am trying to connect my gr.gr.grandfather William to his father Thomas Woods. The trouble is that because of strong naming traditions there are three possible Thomas' all cousins. No matter which one I pick it will lead me on to the same common ancestor but I need some more evidence to decide which one is correct.

The Parish Register for Ballinasloe records baptisms and marriages from 1820 so a few hours spent studying them should help you identify the various cousins and siblings and sort them into their correct families.

These are available on microfilm at the NLI in Dublin or from your local LDS centre (film no.1279217)

Hi Gerald,

Thanks for your reply.I have visited Ballinasloe since I first started this thread.I have been to the old graveyard in Kilclooney ,found the Salmon graves and I was given a tour of the old Salmon homestead. It was great to visit the place where the family lived nearly 200 years ago and my trip helped me to fill in a lot of blanks in the tree.I have just sent you a reply to the e-mail you sent me in reply to my query on another forum.
