Marriage Lookup Please
« on: Saturday 19 May 07 21:34 BST (UK) »
Please could someone lookup the marriage of Vincent Fletcher in 1857 Grantham.

Vincent was born abt 1819 in Clarborough, Notts. and married his 2nd wife Ann sometime between 1851 and 1861.

I came across one marriage in Grantham but it doesn't show the name of Vincent's wife!  ???

Any information would be very much appreciated.

Regards
Sally

I would think it was probably Ann CLARK whose page number is given as 531 - but the other Grantham numbers are all approx 820-860 with Vincent FLETCHER 831.

Geoff

Thanks very much for the information.

I had searched on Ancestry web site and couldn't find Ann, but now having checked with the new information you supplied I can see the page 831 was transcribed as page 531!

Are the page numbers for Gratham something that can be looked up on the internet or is that information from another source?

Thanks again.

Sally

Go to http://www.freebmd.org.uk/cgi/search.pl

I found Vincent FLETCHER in Q2 1857

Search for
Marriages
June 1857-June 1857
Grantham
without putting in any names.

You will get a list (possibly incomplete) of the people who married there and then.

Several of the numbers don't fit into the 820-860ish series, so have probably been wrongly transcribed.  It is those ones that are likely to have your missing person.

Hi Geoff

I tried your link but for some reason it didn't work  ??? - any ideas?

I have now received the marriage certificate and unfortunately it's not what I was hoping for  :( - both Vincent and Ann had not been married before.

It's back to searching for a marriage between Vincent Fletcher and an Ann ? sometime between 1851 and 1861!

Thanks again for your help.

Regards
Sally

Sorry that things do not appear to be correct.

I suppose Vin's first wife (Jane) was the one who died in Retford in 1855.

You didn't say if the bride in the Grantham marriage was Ann CLARK, nor did you mention whether Vin's father had the right name, or whether the occupation was correct.

However ... with respect to the identity of your Vin's wife Ann, I feel I must point out that in the 1851 census there was

Swinegate, Grantham
Ann CLARK (unm) 30 Gen Servant, Lincs Broughton ...
which seems a pretty close match to me.

It seems you have two courses of action available to you-

1) Accept that your certificate - a transcription - contains an error regarding Vin's marital status.

2) Reject the certificate meaning you need to find (to set your mind at rest)...

i) another Vin FLETCHER with the right father's name who could have married Ann CLARK
ii) another Ann from Broughton born c1823 who could have married Vin FLETCHER
iii) find Ann CLARK on the 1861 census to discover her fate
and probably other things as well.

At the end of the day, you have to set your own level of proof. :)

Hi Geoff

No need to appologise I am just very grateful for the help you have given me.

Yes, the marriage certificate is with Ann Clark and yes Vincent's father has the right name and the occupations are correct so I guess you could be right in thinking that Vincent's marital status is just a mistake  ::)

This one has confused me a bit because I had an Ann Clark on the Brant Broughton 1851 census as being born in Broughton - I now realise there is a Broughton and a Brant Broughton in Lincolnshire at quite a distance apart!

I think your 1851 census which I didn't come across before - I agree it's a close match which I will stick with :)

Thanks again.

Was the marriage 'by Licence'?

If so, then Lincolnshire Archives has a marriage licence index which is in date order. Here you'll find the date when the licence was issued, names of both parties, where they resided, occupations, marital status , sometimes ages and where the marriage was going to take place.

I've been in a similar position where the copy of the marriage certificate said the bride was a spinster, but in the marriage licence index she was listed as a widow. The entry in the licence index backed up some other independent information I had discovered.

Don't assume information contained in an official record is always correct.

I'm with Rover on this one. Mistakes can be, and are, made.
I'm transcribing a marriage PR and came across one entry where it clearly says that the bride is a spinster. Oh no she ain't. She's a widow, and was first married in the same church four years (apart from a few days) earlier!
