Gayton MANSFIELD - Witness Old Bailey Trial
« on: Friday 18 May 07 00:58 BST (UK) »
I have a printout of proceedings in an Old Bailey trial of Sep 1816 [ case of theft by Thos Burnford] with one of the main witnesses being a Gayton MANSFIELD.
I believe this Gayton Mansfield to be a key family member but I cannot find anything on him, like death, marriage etc.

Info I have on him from the Court proceedings is that he was employed as a Coachman to a Mr Daniel BEALE Esq whose house was at Edmonton, near to Tottenham High Cross.
The trial was in 1816 and Gayton stated that he had been employed by Daniel Beale Esq for 2 years prior to that.

My 4x great Grandmother was Elizabeth nee MANSFIELD who married Thomas SUMMERTON in St Leonards, Shoreditch 1803. I do not know who Elizabeth's father was nor Thomas'.
The mix of Gayton and Mansfield together is the main reasoning behind my believing/hoping that this witness in the trial is part of my tree.
Hoping to hear from anyone with any help or suggestions. Thanks.

Hi Valda,
Thanks for the info above...problem is that my Gayton MANSFIELD was working for 2 years already in 1816, so am assuming he would have been maybe at least 2o years old - given he was a 'coachman' in 1816.
I have no idea of who his parents were and am assuming again that to be the coachman he would have maybe been born in the area of Edmonton.
I guess that being born pre 1837 I would need to look in the Edmonton parish registers to see if he was born there.
Thanks again for the help...I shall see what else I can find out re this Walter Gayton Mansfield - must be a relation! :)

Hi there!  Not sure if this is of any help, but my Gt-Gt-Gt-Gt-Grandfather is most probably the Gayton Mansfield of the Old Bailey article.  His daughter Hannah (my Gt-Gt-Gt-Grandmother) was born in 1806 and states Edmonton as her place of birth in the 1871 England Census.  Hannah's mother/Gayton's wife was also named Hannah, but I cannot as yet trace her further back than the christenings of her daughters Hannah, Sophia and Eliza Mansfield. They appear to have been non-conformist at that time. Hannah married in 1826 Soho, Westminster, a Robert Edlin and their firstborn son was christened Robert Gayton Edlin.  Their second born son, Thomas Edward Edlin is my Gt-Gt-Grandfather.  I have been struggling to discover where the name "Gayton" derives;  in the online records it is variously deciphered as Gayton, Gaston, Guston, Gaydon, and even Clayton! Handwriting difficulties, obviously!  With very best regards, Cici

Hi CiCi,
Thanks for the reply but I can't see this as being my family...yet.
My Gayton Mansfield SUMMERTON's parents Thomas SUMMERTON and Eliza nee MANSFIELD were married in 1803 so your Eliza was too young to be my Elizabeth MANSFIELD.
I will keep this on file though for future reference and we may find a 'link' one day
Cheers, blessings & thanks
