Hi Sue, or any others,
I am researching a Henry Moss who, at the age of 50, left England in 1856 to set up a successful lighterage business in Melbourne, Australia. I am interested if he was registered as a waterman/lighterman on the Thames in the period 1821-1855. He had a father, John Moss, who we believe was also a lighterman.
Henry was born in 1807 and departed for Australia in January 1856.
Henry, we believe, ran a lighterage business on the Thames near Swan Lane, London with an office in 101 OR 106 Upper Thames Street, with 2 partners until 1843, aged 37, when their partnership was dissolved. Their business name listing: Moss, Leman & Bryan, wharfingers & shipping agents to all parts of Yorkshire & Lancashire, Commercial wharf & Old Swan pier, 101 Upper Thames street.
I also understand that there were quite a few lightermen/watermen with the surname of Moss.
Thank you in anticipation.
