Sue, I have been scrolling through the masses of help that you have been giving everyone and since I am new to this kind of research, wonder if you could help me? I am trying to trace a lighterman - surname Goss - whom I believe worked on the Thames in the 1930's. He may have had his own business. A relative certainly remembers watching the boat race from the craft at that time. It is possible that the there were family river connections before this but I am making a start. I know that this is an inconvenient time to ask for help. You must be very busy. Love B.

Hi there,
I wonder if you could help me please?
I have a William Thomas Thompson 1851 Bermondsey (born about 1817) and his son Christopher Thompson 1861 Whitechapel (born about 1839) who are both lightermen. The father says he is a lighterman master in 1861 (Whitechapel). Could you see if you could find them for me please?
Does the lighterman 'master' bit have any significance? I think the census says he employs 2 men.
Many thanks
Ella-Louise

ella-louise, I am not the right person to help. If you scroll through the whole lighterman site, you will find people who have the records at their finger tips. Good luck. B.

Dear B,
Apologies, you can tell I'm new at this. I've tried again, and hopefully I've done it correctly this time.
Thank you, and Merry Christmas,
Ella-Louise

Dear Sue,
Thanks so much for taking the time to look that up for me, especially over the holiday period. These look very much like my two Thompsons.
I would appreciate any earlier Thompson's too please, as it might help me to get a few more generations back.
Best wishes

Hi! I am looking for any references/instances of THURBIN and variants who might have been Watermen and Lightermen please. I am told that the family had strong connections to the Thames and wondered if any of them had this trade. Many thanks for your help
THURBIN and variants, COOPER from Ireland (Dublin) pre 1860
