Marriage/Baptism Look Up Barnard Castle Please

Hello there!

Could someone please check a marriage and a baptism for me in Barnard Castle?

The marriage is for James Metcalf and Sarah ***.  Their first child, Hannah, seems to have been born about 1836,

James was born 1817ish - any indication of his baptism and parents would be great.

All information regarding the above would be much appreciated.

Hello Ashley! The Rounce Index indicates that a James Metcalf married a Sarah RAINE on 31 December 1834 in Barnard Castle. Hope this is the one you seek! Pat

Hi Ashley, I mis-spoke; the marraige indexes I have were actually indexed by George Bell - he did the years 1812-1837 for both Co. Durham and NBL. The Northumberland & Durham Family History Society sold them....I don't know if they still do. If you need any look ups, just ask! I will be on the road for about a week, but e-mails do catch up with me. Pat

Hi just reread you post.

I have the children's Baptisms:

20 March 1836 Hannah Daughter of James & Sarah Metcalf, Barnard Castle, Weaver
3 March 1838 Martha daughter of James and Sarah Metcalf, Barnard Castle, Weaver
19 December 1839 William son of James and Sarah Metcalf, Barnard Castle, Weaver
12 December 1841 Mary daughher of James and Sarah Metcalf, Barnard  Castle, Weaver

There are two possibilities for James' baptism, the first one is the most obvious, but I don't want to rule out the second, that's your call

15 December 1816 James son of James & Hannah Metcalf Barnard Castle, Tailor
4 September 1814 James & Susannah illegitimate living children of Mary Metcalf, Barnard Castle, Single woman

On other baptisms of children born to James and Hannah, there's some really good info:

1803: Mary Metcalf of Barnard Castle born June 16th baptaised Octr 9th 2nd daughter of James Metcalfe, Taylor, Native of Newcar (also spelled Nucar in one entry) Yorkshire by his wife Hannah Shield, Native of Auckham (also spelled Oakham and Ochum in different  entries) Rutlandshire
There was also Elizabth born 23rd April, baptised October 19 (1806)
James born April 1st, baptised Dec 3rd (1809)
William born Sept 24th baptised Oct 13th (1811)
William baptised 10 October 1813

Wow Anita - that's wonderful stuff - no wonder I couldn't find Hannah locally!

I'm pretty sure that they are James parents from his age in the censuses but thanks for providing the alternative.

Thanks so much for your help Anita.  Now I've got a whole new county (Rutland) to explore!

One last question if I may.

Are you working from a scan of the original or a transcript?  I was wondering if the Newcar/Nucar could actually start with an M - he is looking like the one born Muker in Swaledale in 1775 as he is still alive in the 1841 census with a birth year of 1776.
