French Canadian Rellie, Help Please

Can anyone advise me of where to start with a name EUSEBE MARS DITE COMPTOIR,
From what my Auntie said, she was French Canadian.  The only info I can find is on the 1861 British Census,
Can someone help out with the understanding of this name please, and advise where to start looking for this lady before 1861.  The only other thing I can state that her husband Samuel Hodge was a Chelsea Pensioner, and do not know where to start looking for their marriage cert.  Any help would be very much appreciated.

There are Comptoir's in the Province of Quebec.  Do you know who Eusebe's parents are?  The 1851 Census is available for Quebec.

No, unfortunatly I do not have any other details of parantage or where she came from.  so really at a loss of where to begin.  Can you check census's for Canada, and if so do you have a link to web site I could have a look.

I couldn't find a marriage on FreeBMD (in case they were married in England) but maybe someone else can:

One thought would be to find out where their son was baptized (probably in Cornwall) and then check to see if they were married at the same church.

I see that Samuel has a wife named Sarah in 1871.  But I can't find a death for Eusebe between 1861-1871 on FreeBMD.  Again, maybe someone else can.  If not, maybe she might have been buried in the town where they were listed in 1861, so it might be worth it to find out if church records are available.

Mars name variations are Massé and du Vailly.

Surname Mars indicates see Massé.

As she was born abt 1822 and Canada's borders changed, she could well have been born in what became the USA and records may be in the USA. This happened with my early French ancestors.

Also from what I see Eusèbe is a male name. Wonder if there is a feminine version with an additional e.

I'd suggest trying to track down Samuel's army records - which should be at the National Archives, as well as looking at the overseas indexes (these are on findmypast) of army marriages.

Interesting Linda,  My great aunt was a Masse from Quebec.  I have not done much on her side, there are stories of voyagers and indians and banishments to Ontario.  Maybe one day I'll be brave and tackle it

I also have Voyageurs and Indians on my Dad's side. One of his rellies was also one of the first settler in what is now Orillia. Lots of interesting stuff. 

Watch the Quebec, as dependant on birth date could be Ontario or the US. My rellie gave her place of birth as Quebec, her daughter on Canadian census up to and including 1881 was listed as Ontario. She, the mom was born abt 1805 and I was lucky to locate her daughter on a 1900 US census where she lists her mothers birth as Ohio and hers as New York.

Ohio was New France at the time of my rellies' birth. The French residents of Quebec strongly resented the Royal Proclamation of 1763, which imposed British institutions on them. Many of its provisions, however, were reversed by the Quebec Act (1774), which granted important concessions to the French and extended Quebec's borders westward and southward to include all the inland territory to the Ohio and the Mississippi. Makes it understandable the mother' gave her birthplace as Quebec and her daughter living in the U.S. in 1900 would give her mom's birthplace as Ohio.
