General question regarding census'
« on: Saturday 12 May 07 21:52 BST (UK) »
Could skp help with a general question regarding census' and the recording of Army and navy barracks.

Q: How do you find them on the ancestry site. I've just signed for the free trial and have no idea how to access the records for the Army/Navy barracks/ports.

Thank you

Lizzy :D

Thank you for getting back to me.

I found the one of the my rellies in the 1891 census based in Horsfield Bristol at the Barracks there.  I know that there are a few other Male rellies who may well have been in the forces and just wanted to know if there is any way to check.

Sorry Margi,

I mis-read who had asked the question!  (Senile Moment)

Trouble is I know that there  is a list of Census returns for many of the Barracks but I have lost the link. and can't as yet find it by Googling.

It has been compiled by someone as a Web Site. Will have a look on EOLFH, just  to see if the link was there

Hi Lizzie,

You will possibly have more success with this link.

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/jeffery.knaggs/index.html

Go the the Google search at the bottom of the Page and Type Institutions.

Pages of Jeff Knaggs lists will come up. I haven't searched them this time ,but when I used it some years ago, found many 1901 returns from Army Barracks. I was only looking for Chatham and Portsmouth.
