Thank you, Tati, that sounds promising. I suppose I'll need Alexanders birth details now, I'm a bit stuck now it's pre 1837 as I'm new to all this. I suppose we could assume that Burn was Mary's maiden name, but equally he could be the son of a sister of Johns. Aaargh

Sorry, parish records aren't my speciality. Alexander's birth isn't on the IGI. However, what I can see on the IGI is:

Marriage John Snowball - Mary Burn
16 MAY 1837   Hexham, Northumberland

If these are yours then Mary probably wasn't Alexander's mother. Also it's quite disappointing - civil registration started on 1 July 1837 ... if they had married just a few weeks later, you could have access to a cert giving John's father's name 

I still can't see Alexander in 1841 ...

That's very interesting Tati, again that does sound promising and could well be a 2nd (or 3rd) marriage. Actually I'm happy with that as Mary seemed a bit young to be Alexanders mother. It just didn't have the right "feel" iyswim.
Alexander is what you might call elusive, 1881 and 1861 are all I've found of him up to now, although the family moved around a lot as nearly all 10 kids were born in different places.

I'm trying to find any info on the following:
Alexander Snowball b1826c Haydon Bridge married Ann Ferry 1847 and had 10 children, John 1848, William 1851, Joseph 1854, Jane A 1856, Isabella 1858, Robert 1860, Barbara 1865, Alexander 1867, Hannah 1869 and Elizabeth 1871.
By 1881 the family were living in Tudhoe. Any info much appreciated.
