no questions are stupid.

The simple answer is - you dont! With a common surname there will be hundreds of possibilities.
With a name like Bickerdyke you are lucky.
but you will need to send for certs to prove they are the right ones - should show father, Thomas.

Sometimes you need to approach things from a number of different angles. For example, seeing if Lily senior made a will-  if so it may mention her daughters by their married names. Or finding the marriage of one of them - and then you may find one of the sisters was a witness and was already married, so gives her married name. Keep an open mind and slowly piece bits together, is my advise, and most of all - never assume anything!
Happy hunting - I take it you are into it yourself now, so i shall back off!
But hopefully the info on Lily actually being a Gaines was useful.

Maybe this is why you couldn't find her death as Potts?

Lily L Bickerdyke married Benjamin POTTER in Leeds in Mar 1/4 of 1921

And her death as Lily L POTTER happened in Leeds in the March 1/4 of 1946 she was 58 ref 9b page 512.

Regards,

Carol

I'm sure there are many who would say otherwise......

But I must say this is a rewarding thread - from the sketchy info that Emliy Bickerdyke had a mum Lily Potts and thre sisters whose surname was unknown, we have (subject to confirmation by certs, but I am 100% sure) found that Lily was actually a Gaines, who married a Bickerdyke in 1907, had the four girls in 1908 - 18, and later married a Potter in 1921!
I am itching to find Thomas Bickerdykes death (which we now know is between 1918 and 1921)  to round it off, but I did tell Silver I would back off now he/she is getting into it!
And then it is all set for finding Lily L Gaines in the censuses as a child too...
