Would you happen to have a Wilfred or William Wilfred Butler, living about the 1880s to 1920s  in Nottinghamshire in your tree? I can't find his birth or residence in the 1891 or 1901 censuses.

Hi Eric,

Unfortunately I haven't managed to trace the Butler family past Samuel Butler, born 1798 in Sutton in Ashfield.  He was living in Spittlegate, Grantham by 1851 as per the 1851 census with his wife Martha and family -

Another daughter, Sarah Anne, is living in Commercial Road, Spittlegate, and it is from her I am descended.

However, I looked at the IGI and found Samuel Butler's birth -

Father:   John Butler
Mother     Rosamund Halton
James Butler - born 1791
Anne Butler - boprn 1800
Nelly Butler - born 1789
Rosamund Butler - born 1793
Susannah Butler - born 1796
Samuel Butler - born 1798
William Butler - born 1805

*  The William Butler may be of interest to you, as this is one of the names you are researching.  (Usually one son at least is called after the father!)

Samuel Butler was a carpenter in Spittlegate. 

Anyway, I will look out for any Butlers who come along.

Hello Myra, 

I know you already have the children born to John Butler & Rosamund Halton from the IGI and that they married at St Mary’s, Sutton in Ashfield, 16th May 1780, but I just thought I would mention that it appears they also had children baptised at the Independent Congregation Chapel at Sutton in Ashfield……

Parents John & Rosamund Butler;

JOSEPH born 25th July 1782, baptised 17th Dec 1787
SARAH born 25th June 1784, baptised 17th Dec 1787
JOHN born 28th June 1786, baptised 17th Dec 1787

From the NHFS burial index = Sutton in Ashfield
Rosamund Butler 15th July 1806 – Wife of John

There were seven John Butler’s buried in Sutton, four of them children, one buried in 1900 aged 28, one on the 13th Dec 1868, aged 84… he could possibly be John & Rosamund’s son?, and the other 23rd April 1820, aged 66 which is the closest possibility to being your John.

There is also a burial for a Hannah Butler 4th November 1801 – daughter of John & Rosamund

Sutton in Ashfield registers cover from 1578 and the Independent Congregation from 1773 and it looks like yours were the first Butlers mentioned in Sutton in Ashfield.

Many thanks - It is possible the John you mentioned could be my John so will follow this lead up.

Many thanks too for the burial information - next time I am in UK will visit Sutton in Ashfield - I have visited Grantham where the Butlers eventually ended up and it was quite wonderful being in the street where they lived in 1851.  I don't think the houses were the same ones, but it was a lovely experience.

Are you still researching the Butlers from Sutton in Ashfield, because I believe I am descended also from John Butler and Rosamunde Halton through their son Joseph born 1782.

However, I had made an assumption that Rosamunde's husband was a Joseph, because in one record relating to their son b1782 he is referred to as Joseph Jr.  However, this is just from a note on my tree and I can't find my source of this information, and it's a few years since I was concentrating on this branch of the family, so my info may be completely wrong.

Hope you get this message, I note that it was four years ago that this thread was started.  If so I would love to swap information.

I am sure you are on the right track.  I have a son Joseph born to John Butler and Rosamunde Halton in 1782, so I am sure this is the right family.   The information I have is:

John Butler and Rosamund Halton (from the IGI) were married at St. Mary's, Sutton in Ashfield on 16th May, 1780, and children baptised at the Independent Congregation Chapel in sutton in Ashfield are:

Joseph b. 25th July, 1782, baptised 17th December
1787
Sarah, b. 25th June, 1784 - bap. 17th Dec. 1787
John, b. 28th June, 1786, bap. 17th December, 1787

From the NHFS Burial Index - Sutton in Ashfield, Rosamund Butler - wife of John Butler, buried 15th July, 1806

Samuel Butler (m. gt.gt.grandfather) born 1798 died in Grantham in 1855.

Other children of John Butler and Rosamund Halton are:

James - 1791
Anne - 1800
Nelly - 1789
Rosamund - 1793 
Susannah - 1796
Samuel - 1798
William - 1805

Samuel Butler married Martha Bullimore in Grantham in 1823.  They were living in Melton Mowbray in the 1841 census and at Grantham in the 1851 census. 

Their daughter Sarah Anne married John Reece in Grantham in 1856 , then moved to Scotland.  Sarah Anne Butler died in Fort William in 1883.  They were my gt.grandparents.  (I was born in fort William before migrating with my family to Tasmania in 1952).
