John Winder Watson 1823-1903 - A Quaker?
« on: Sunday 06 May 07 17:11 BST (UK) »
Have found this person on various censuses and believe I have traced him back as a grandson of a Jacob WATSON who married a Mercy WINDER 22 Sept 1783 in Leeds - IGI entry.  I think this might be a Quaker entry but am not sure - can anyone help?
Thank you
Pat

Yes, definitely Quaker. All the Quaker BMDs for England & Wales, up to 1837, are now on Ancestry. PRO Class RG 6.

There is a biographical entry on John Winder Watson in Edward H. Milligan's Biographical Dictionary of British Quakers in Commerce and Industry 1775-1920 (2007, Sessions Book Trust).

Many thanks Ben,
John Winder Watson was, I believe, educated at Ackworth School (another Quaker Connection) and his son, another John Winder Watson was a Chemist who lived in Weston-super-Mare and was buried there in 1923.

For 19th Century 'Society of Friends' Obituaries, you can find most of their "The Annual Monitor" published each year from the 1840s online, on 'internet archive' for free download. Found mine by typing in his name in commas and year of death into an internet search engine. It does not give you a burial place, but an age and a place.

For example I typed into an internet search engine "William Hood" Selby 1870

and found the 1871 Edition, for 1870 ...

For some individuals there is some information about them, so check the pages of text before and after the list, but for others it is only a one line record, with their age. In most editions there is an errata and also worth checking the errata in the following year edition. Some Society of Friends deaths are reported in the years following.

Never been there, but Leeds University Library/Special Collections, have Quaker files for Selby and some other Yorkshire places?
