Hello

I have Jesse Hall & Annie Bates Marriage:
1885
Jesse HALL and Annie BATES,
Sep qtr 1885, Godstone, Surrey
2a 299.
Marriage from FreeBMD

Do either of them feature in the 1881 census? Annie would be 32, & Jessie 29.  Family stories have Jessie as a gamekeeper on an estate, where he met Annie, who either worked there or was the Daughter....

So perhaps her family/parents (William and Mary Bates) from Fyfield Essex are in the census too?

Thanks

Geoff

Hi Geoff  :)

Did you know the 1881 census is free to search at various places, for instance www.familysearch.org and www.ancestry.co.uk ?

Where were both born?  :)

The LDS census is as complete as you will get, I would think - Could they have been outside of England/Wales at census time?

If this is your Annie - her mother may not have been Mary A. There is also a John Crabb with the family in 1861 & he could be an Uncle perhaps to William (middle name Crabb)

William Crabb BATES married Charlotte LUCKING, Mar qtr 1840, Stepney, 2 379

Charlotte BATES died Sep qtr 1859, Ongar, 4a 48

William Crabb BATES possibly married Mary Ann HOAD, Dec qtr 1860, Ongar, 4a 85.

Lookes like Charlotte was mother to all of them

William aged 55 and his wife Mary aged 55 were in Fyfield, next door to a Samuel LUCKING, who could well have been a brother to Charlotte above.

William Crabb BATES died Mar qtr 1864, Ongar, 4a 56

Perhaps Mary his widow married again.

Could not find Ann anywhere in 1871 or 1881, but did find possibly her brothers William and Samuel, who were butlers.

From the IGI if you do not already have it - submitted entry
William BATES married Mary CRABB, 15 Nov 1814, Chipping Ongar, Essex

1881
RG11/266/97/6
In St Mary's Islington (can't make out the street name) there is a William LEWIS, Solicitor aged 49. Along with his family there are three servants, one of whom is indexed at Annie BALES. Looking at the image it could be BATES, without the T crossed. She is aged 32 and born Essex.

Only Annie that I can see that looks about the right age etc.

Looking for Jesse, but still can't find him in 1881. His brother James is in West Meon, Hampshire, with a son Jesse. At least I assume he is a brother, born 1856 at Hinton Ampner.
