Hi Romilly,  saw your question regarding The Railway Inn, according to the Kirkby Fragments booklet Vol 4, published by The History of Kirkby Group,  there is a pub at Sandside called the Railway Arms, but they state that it opened in 1846 but no record of an Inn or Beerhouse in the area in the 1851 Census. First records were found in 1876 when Licencee was G. Holmes, owners were W. Ashburner, Brewers of Dalton. I reckon it must have been an unlicenced premesis. If you want the booklet(s)
there are 4 of them price £3.50 each, you can get them from,
CA Rowntree, Old Mill, Beckside, Kirkby in Furness, Cumbria
LA17 7TH. Hope you don't mind me butting in. Regards, Jim.
Banks, Gillbanks, Fallows families in the  Furness area of Lancashire
Banks, Gillbanks, Cumberland. Westmoreland, Lancashire.
Betteridge, Liverpool,

Hi Jim,

Thanks for the info, - & of course you're not butting in!!

On the 1861 Census for Kirkby Ireleth, My G/Grandparents, William & Elizabeth (née Brunton) Wilson, are shown as residing at:

114 Sandside; which is called, 'The Railway Inn', (Ref: RG9/3172).

William Wilson's Occupation is given as 'BeerHouse Keeper & Slate Quarrier', - an interesting combination ;D ;D

I might be wrong, but I don't think that Beerhouses required a similar liscence to a Pub; which would have served liquor other than just beer...

Thanks for the info about the 'Kirkby Fragments', - I will get onto that!

Btw...I still haven't managed to get hold of a copy of 'Burlington Blue-Grey':-(
Hopefully they will do a re-print of it at some stage.

Best Wishes, Romilly.
