Quail of Kirby Ireleth
« on: Thursday 03 May 07 19:08 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the mysterious Thomas Quail or Quailie of Kirby Ireleth (not sure where that is).  He likely married Mary Adison in Dalton-in-Furness before moving to Kirby Ireleth.  Haven't been able to trace him further.  Family story says the family came from the Isle of Man.

All help appreciated! Thanks, Laverdiere

QUAIL, THOMAS married Mary Adison in the parish of Dalton-in-Furness, Lancashire in 1757 .  They then moved to the parish of Kirkby Ireleth where the following children were born:

1.   Thomas Quail
2.   Esther Quail
3.   Mary Quail
4.   Henry Quail
5.   John Quail
6.   Anne Quail
7.   James Quail
8.   Betty Quail

Thomas was born while the family lived at Craggfield.  The rest of the children (except the youngest two) were born at Burney.  James and Betty were christened in Bootle, Cumberland.

Thomas was a farmer and died sometime before 1842 .

Hi Laverdiere,

My Grandfather was born in Kirkby Ireleth in 1860. It was then in Lancs, - now in Cumbria. The Registration District was Ulverston.

HTH, Romilly.

Hi Laverdiere,

I live in Dalton In Furness and know of Addisons. Ireleth as it is now know is about 3 miles from here.

What particularly interests me is I have Quayles in my tree, just discovered them. Many People who have roots in Cumberland have Manx ancestry as i do.

Please let me know if I can help,

Carol Oliver.

Hi Carol, thanks for your offer of help!  It's nice to have someone "on location."  I live in Canada.  I was going to order the parish records of Dalton in furness and Ireleth and see if I can get the connection between the Quail/Addisons mapped out.

Which Quails are you related too?

I wonder if my Thomas Quail is buried in some Ireleth gaveyard?  He died before 1842.  Is Bootle near Ireleth?  The last two children were born there.

My Ann Quail ended up married Christopher Wedderburn of Lindale farm, Dalton-in-Furness and they immigrated to South Africa in 1820.  Christopher was the son of John Wedderburn and Ann Hodgson.

Thanks, Laverdiere

Hi Carol,

I would love to know if any of the places where my Wilson ancestors lived in Kirkby Ireleth still exist.

They variously lived in Sandside, Beckside Cottage & Friar's Ground, (according to the Censuses).

I would imagine that they married & were baptized at St Cuthberts...

Do you ever get over that way?

Romilly.

I have looked at many maps thank you.

However, I am in SW. Hertfordshire & haven't been able to visit Cumbria as yet...(although I would like to one day).

It would be lovely to know how much is still there though...& I don't think that maps can tell me this.

Romilly.

Hi Romilly,

As you have seen those places do still exist, Kirby is about 8 miles from me and Ireleth about 3. When I have a little spare time, between work and kids lol I would be more than happy to take some pictures for you. I could e mail them to you. Not sure how I can get your e mail through here though.Let me know.

Laverdiere hi too!

My Quayles are spelt differently and were from the Isle of Man, descendants moved to Workington in 1850.Bootle is about 20 miles further up the coast from Kirby.

Please let me know if I can help.

Have either of you been here? Id be delighted to mail photos to either ogf you and can look for graves in the churchyards, infact I love doing that!!

Regards,

Carol

Hi Carol,

Thanks for your kind offer, - I would love to see some pics. (I have PM'd you with contact details, as you can't send pics by PM on here).

I expect that my lot would have been too poor for gravestones, (they were all Slate Quarriers), but you never know ;D ;D

I'd be fascinated to know if 'The Railway Inn'; which my Great Grandfather was running in 1861, is still there!!

Cheers, Romilly :)
