Parker family: Tetbury
« on: Tuesday 01 May 07 17:33 BST (UK) »
Lewin Parker married Amelia Barrett in 1847, in Tetbury registration district. They had  3 children; Elizabeth, Mary Ann, and George, baptised in Tetbury between 1848 and1853. Lewin's name is also transcribed as Lewis in the IGI.
The family emigrated to Victoria Australia in 1869. Try as I might I can not find the family in either the 1851 census or the 1861 census on "find my past"

Can anybody help. This is for a friend in Australia who is coming over later this year.

Hi Newfy,
Thanks for the reply. Its all verrrrrry interesting!!!!!
Lewis, Lewin or Llewellin Parker's age is given as 40 on the Victoria Australia. government web site when the family arrived in Melbourne in 1869. Amelia and Mary Ann's ages are about right. Eliza and Frederick were not with the family when they emigrated.

Thanks again
Eric

Yes, Eliza and Frederick were the children of Amelia Barrett. No father's name given.

Lewin, or Lewis or Llewellin Parker is proving very elusive. I thought I had him in 1841 as Lewis in Cheltenham, but now i'm not at all sure, and I've searched everything in the 1861 census I can think of.

However I have found in a datase on the Gloucester Archives web site a reference to a Lewin Parker in 1840, a labourer from Tetbury in the "gaol" catalogue! So I shall follow that up.

Hi Newfry,
You may remember early in May, doing a look-up for me on Lewin Parker and family of Tetbury.
You found him, as Lewellin, in the 1851 census, but no entry for him in 1841 or 1861.
I mentioned that I had a ref. to him in the gaol data base in Gloucestershire archives. Just to say that I have received a photocopy of the entry. It gives the most wonderful info. not only his age, but a full description of his appearance, including the fact that he had a mole on his shoulder blade, and that his left leg bent inwards at the knee joint!!! His height and occupation. The charge laid against him and the sentence, plus the fact that his behaviour was "orderly". He got a fortnight in the penitentiary.
If his offence had been worse he might have got to Australia free, instead of  having to pay for himself and family to emigrate  in the 1860s!!!!!!!!

Thi is really just to say what a good source this is and if anyone has ancestors in Gloucestershire it is well worth looking at the Archives site. There are several other data bases there.
