could anyone please help me
i would like to trace my great grandmother in the
1861 middlesex census
her name was eliza coleman and in 1861 she would be
about 13, her father was william coleman and at this time
he would be 43 approx

Do you know whereabouts in Middlesex the family were born or are likely to be living and have you managed to find them already in 1881 and 1901?

hi rick
many thanks for your interest,afraid all i know is
that my great grandmother eliza coleman was married
to henry mann at st marylebone in 1868 so i imagine
the family lived fairly close by.the only other clue i have
is that her father william coleman had connections with
furniture dealing.

Could this be Eliza and Henry in 1871?  The elder children pre-date the marriage date you give.  Eliza gives her place of birth as Clerkenwell, and luckily I have the 1851 Clerkenwell index!  I will check this if you think that the 71 entry relates to your family.

many thanks for your kind help.unfortunately the family
you found dont  match with the 1881 census. by this time
they were living in lincolnshire and neither their ages or
children are compatible.i feel the main clue could be a
long remembered family story that william coleman lived
very close to fleet street in the 1880s and perhaps he
was near to this area in the 1860s

Unfortunately, although there is an online London 1861 index (pay to view; http://thegenealogist.sandn.net/), this is a work in progress, and I cannot find a William and Eliza living together.  To trawl through this area of London would take a great deal of time without an exact address. 

This might be the family in 71.

is certainly my great grandparents and is a piece of the
jigsaw i didnt have.if i could be a pest again,i have found
in an online old directory a william coleman furniture
dealer living in eversholt street london.would it be possible
to check this address in early census returns?

I have checked Eversholt St, Pancras in 1851, but could not find any COLEMANS.  What date was the directory you checked?
