Thorpe Coombe Maternity Hospital - Completed
« on: Monday 30 April 07 17:25 BST (UK) »
I'm interested in Thorpe Coombe Maternity Hospital in Walthamstow as I was born there (I tried to change my mind but they wouldn't let me!) I understand it closed in the 1970s.  Does anyone know where I can see any photographs of it, or any information?  Or does anyone remember it, or know anyone who worked there, or was anyone else born there?

Thanks,

Mrs Lizzy

Hi MrsLizzy
If you google Thorpe Coombe Materity hospital it comes up with serveral sites about it.
There is also a photo of a hospital here, not sure it's the one you want though

http://www.nelmht.nhs.uk/loc-thorpecoombe.html

Thorpe Coombe Hospital is a psychiatric unit and former maternity hospital in Walthamstow, north-east London, and part of North East London NHS Mental Health Trust.

[edit] History
The hospital was opened as a maternity hospital in 1934, making use of part of a mansion which had been owned by Octavius Wigram. It ceased maternity facilities in 1973 and was subsequently used as a nurses' home, then a treatment centre for Alzheimer's disease patients, and latterly an out-patients psychiatric hospital.

Never a large hospital (as a maternity hospital it had 70 beds), today it predominately houses administrative staff: it is the base for the local community mental health team. It does however still offer some out-patient treatment for children and teenagers.

Hi Lizzy,
I'm a bit tardy in my reply but I've just started looking at the London board.
I lived in Walthamstow (1947-64) and I knew many people born in Thorpe Coombe but I've lost touch or they've died :'(.

You might try looking at these sites:-

Hi All
Only just noticed this post but I was born in Thorpe Coome in 1945 along with both of my brothers.
We lived just a short walk away in Corbett road until about 1952 and went to Wood street primary school ,  I remember walking to school with a hanky tied round my mouth because of the smog all good stuff!!!!

thanks for the links Genie.

We moved away when I was still a baby.  Mum had this fantasy of "living in the countryside" and the poor old bat thought Thurrock was rural!   ;D ;D  So we lived in Sarf Ockendon till I was in my 20s before we finally sold up and moved to Lincolnshire.

Hi Lizzy,
your welcome! You asked for anyone born in Thorpe Coombe and if you browse those sites I would guess that 50% of the folks on there were born in that hospital. I know one of my sister's kids was.

Speaking of Thurrock being rural at one time ;D, my sister "moved to the country" to Canvey Island in the 60's ;D ;D.  Now I keep telling her to get off of there or keep an inflatable boat handy 'cause it's gonna sink one day. :o

I left W'stow in 1964 and live in Canada now, we've still got some wide open spaces here. How's Lincolnshire?
