Thomas Beston
« on: Sunday 29 April 07 22:07 BST (UK) »
My great-great-grandfather was Thomas Beston born in Clonmel c1840-1845.  He moved to Bermondsey, London, England where he married Elizabeth Charlotte (sometimes known in the census images as Charlotte Elizabeth).  I would like to find his parents and siblings but can find no information on this whatsoever.  Can anyone help me please?

Thanks in anticipation.

Chloe,

Griffiths Valuation has several listings for Bestons owning or leasing land in Tipperary South Riding.

There is one for a Thomas Beston living at Toberaheena in the parish of Inishlounaght which is in Clonmel.

Parish details on this link:

Chloe,

One other item of interest for you.

The "William Smith O'Brien Petition" of 1848-1849 was signed in Limerick by a Thomas Beston.

Thank you Ronnie.  Any ideas how I'd go about pinpointing his parents with this?  I'm afraid I'm new to Griffiths so not sure how this would work and also I'd imagine the Thomas Beston who signed the William Smith O'Brien Petition would certainly be the father.  Any other suggestions much appreciated!

Chloe,

IGI has a birth record for Thomas Beston born 1st May 1874 in Tipperary.

Parents James Beston and Mary Flemming.

The Beston name seems to be concentrated in the Clonmel/ South Tipp. area which is pretty well served with historical archives so you have a better than average chance of finding him.

Thank you Ronnie.  However, this isn't my Thomas Beston as he was born around 1840-1844.  His first child, also Thomas was born in 1868 in Bermondsey, so of course the record you have kindly found means this person would have been even younger than his first child!!

Chloe,

I didn't think that the Thomas Bestons I mentioned were your man, that would be too lucky!

But bear in mind that there were very strong traditions regarding the handing down of names in a family. This can be annoying sometimes, as the name a person is known by can turn out to be different to their "official" name when you find a record - but you can sometimes find clusters of one particular given name which can lead you to the source.

I have a "fuzzy link" in my own family because there were so many Thomas's, but I do know they are all in my family I just don't know who is the uncle and who is the daddy!

Chloe,

Are you living in Ireland or do you have someone here who could look at the Parish Register for you?

Alas no, that is where my problem lies!  If I were local or had contacts there I can't help thinking I would have been able to locate some information by now.  I've written to all the churches in Clonmel, but only one has answered to say nothing in their Parish register!
