Lanarkshire Coal Mining in 1800s
« on: Sunday 29 April 07 19:38 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone have any good sites they can recommend on the Lanarkshire Coal Mining indusrty in the 1880s. My forebears worked there, primarily in Cambusnethan area (Wishaw) and I would like some good references to get a better feel for the social history, conditions etc they lived in.

I'm not having much luck with any substantial information from Google.

Any help much appreciated

Thanks

Ann

Hi Ann

I've found this site useful for background to coal mining in Lanarkshire:

http://www.mining-villages.co.uk/index.html

It has lists of accidents in the mines and also has some descriptions of the housing provided by the collieries from the 1910 housing report. These give general descriptions such as the number of 1 or 2 roomed houses in a particular street/area and the age of the houses so although its 1910 some of those houses would have been around in the 1880s.
