My great great grandfather was a hansom cab driver in the 1880s - East End of London.  I've always wanted to see a picture of the sort of vehicle he'd have used.  He worked as a taxi driver until seven years before his death in 1936, when ill-health forced him to retire.

This is a recent photo of the Victor Harbor Horse drawn tram that runs across the causeway to Granite Island. These trams have been running since 1894 and are now considered an icon. They did look a little different back then, but are basically the same - have just been refurbished to take into account safety, comfort (?)  etc.

This link shows them in earlier years.....

Hi Freddie - not sure about this one.... Is it from the same collection by any chance? There is an electric railway at Llandudno - The Great Orme Railway - so it is possible that it could be another local photo. The scenery certainly looks similar. Here's a link to a photo but the train design looks slightly different.  There are other electric railways in North Wales too.

I cleaned your photo up to get a better look.

Hi Milly

Thanks for the clean up :D all I'm sure about is that they come from my grandads biscuit tin of photo's he died in 1963 and they are still kept there  :o, the tram one is faded sepia and the beached boat is an old black & white but looking at the post card you sent it does look like it could be the same area.

Hi Lizzy sorry I haven't got a photo of a Hansom Cab, I wish I did, this is all I can offer you....

Hi Dee thank you for that site, gosh there is so much on there I got a little waylaid with the "Anzacs at Gallipoli trail" photos before finding the trams :)

Loved the pictures of the motorbikes - reminded me of a photo I had printed from some old negatives I found. I believe it is either my fathers, or it belonged to one of his 6 brothers - probably taken in the Clerkenwell area of London.

Also liked the Llandudno tram pictures - my brother is the Secretary of the Llandudno & Colwyn Bay Tram Society.

I thought I'd add a favourite of mine - my grandfather was a chauffeur for a few months (after leaving the regular army in 1913 - before he was recalled to the colours when WW1 began).

It is an Arrol Johnston open tourer (thanks to the National Motor Museum, who kindly identified it for me some years ago).
