Bishops Transcripts
« on: Tuesday 09 March 04 12:40 GMT (UK) »
Hope you'll forgive my ignorance and at the risk of sounding naive...is it possible to check the bishops transcripts for a particular area or place 'on line'? Trying to trace a marriage record pre 1837 this could be a possibility.

Kazza. Thank you for reply. Been trying for ages to locate marriage record for William and Ellen Iliffe, found on 1851 census at 57 Shude Hill Manchester. Their daughter Eliza Ann was christened at Manchester Cathedral in 1832 but the certif. doesn't give mothers maiden name. Believe its Townsend, as Elizabeth Townsend was staying with them on the 1841 census 67 years b. Edinburgh and Ellen too was born Edinburgh, though I've not found them on any Scottish records. William was born in Cleckheaton. Yorks. so where the marriage took place is debatable, but I guessits Manchester. Don't know where to go from here.

Hi there

Just had a look on the British Isles Vital Records Index for the marriage of William & Ellen.
Although there were 2 marriages of a William Iliffe, niether of them married an Ellen.
So looked for a batism of an Elizabeth Ann(e) and again, although there were two, niether of them was the correct date or had the correct parents

Sorry I could not find them for you

Just for clarification Louisa,

Bishop's Transcripts are not available online to check as a collection.  However,  as Chris in 1066 reminded me yesterday,  the BI VRI are made up of BTs,  but not all are in there as yet.  Sorry yours does not seem to be there,  but never give up,  these brick walls have a way of crumbling eventually.   ;D

And thanks for the check Chris,  :D

Hi Dreamer. Such a while since I posted that message, I'd given up.
Still no further forward, except that Ticker very kindly suggested I try Familyhistoryonline. No luck when I tapped in William Iliffe but when I just put the surname in I got a whole host. So now I think I have to lash out on a pay voucher to check the results.
I'm always open to suggestions as have been chasing these ancestors for years and they are so elusive, so yes wield your sledgehammer by all means. Who knows what we may find in the rubble! Good luck with your own researchand thanks for interest. Louisa

I don't think this is always the case - for Yorkshire, I've found that most, if not all, of the IGI entries are taken from the BTs, and in many cases the BVRI is taken from the PRs.
