Irish ancestors

Hi there,
I don't know if anyone can help here but i've just found one of my ancestors was Irish and i've never had to research the Irish before, although from what i can understand, it isn't very easy!!
My ancestor was John Pooley. He was born about 1816 in Ireland, but i don't know where. By 1851 he was living in England and he married Catherine Curphy who was the Isle Of Man.
I know this isn't a lot to go on but i would love to know something about him, where he came from or something. Any help or info anyone could offer would be a huge help. Thanks a lot everyone.

Hi,

Pooley is not an Irish name I have ever come across. I only found one reference in a Quaker will as a landowner in early 18th century in Dublin.

Are there any other Pooley households nearby?
Does the marriage certificate have any clue to his father's name and occupation?
Do you know his religion?

As you may already know, there are no complete census indices for ireland prior to 1901.

One of the major substitutes we use is Griffiths Valuation, a property survey carried out 1847-1864 which lists owners and occupiers of all lands and buildings.

I have had a look at this for you and there are only two mentions of Pooley there.

The first is J M Pooley from Donnybrook in Dublin and the second is Margaret Pooley of Ettagh in King's County (now offaly).

So at least you now know that he wasn't the only Pooley over here!

Hi.

My husbands Uncle Jack Pooley born in Cleator. Cumberland. in 1914 & was the great grandson of John Pooley 1819 Ireland & Catherine Curphy 1827ish Isle Of Man.  They were married in the Isle Of Man but then came over to Cumberland.
Jacks daughter has recently started to research her family history & would be thrilled if we could find out more.
