he's not at that address on the 1881 census. Princes Square seems to have large houses with many servants - heads of neighbouring houses being retired army, navy, Indian civil service. At no.17, only the coachman and his family is at home - John Anstead RG11/21 folio 113 pg 12.

Occupant of 17 in 1891 is William Muller, A Russian Merchant from Stepney. But in 1881, he's at 11 Kensington Gdn Sq.

Haven't managed to find street in 1871 as yet so still no idea who might have been living there in 1880.

no 17 not mentioned in 1871. 16 is unoccupied but no 17. The street comes under St John's Paddington, at least that's where it appears to be in 1881.

I think the boy is in Scotland in 1881 and 1891 but I don't have access to the image.

He wouldn' have been working in London at age 12, would he?  ??? :P

Only reason I was looking at 1871 was to try & find out the occupant's name. But, by the look of it, the houses could be leased.

perhaps he was when his father wrote the will? Census is only a snapshot. You can't tell whether the person was in the same house the following year or even the following week!

I am researching this gentlemen. It is said he emigrated to New Zealand in 1891 with his brother William. Active in the finance and investment arena, he was later knighted. He married Rachel Winifred McKerrow in 1897, and they had three sons, William Maxwell, James Bruce and George Paterson.

Both George and brother William died in NZ.

Prior to his marriage, and we suppose at the time he and his brother were engaged in the flax industry shortly after their arrival in NZ, George Elliot had a child with a Maori woman, Paewhenua Tarewa, who was a sister to my great-grandfater, Rota Tarewa. Although the birth of the child George Moho Elliot is not recorded, family history states the very definite links between the families.

I would appreciate hearing of any further information you might be able to proffer regarding the Scottish antecedents of the family, in particular those relating to William Elliot and Janet Easton etc who I understand were married in Edinburgh 12 Oct 1857, and any of their children. We are currently compiling a comprehensive record of the various families associated with the Tarewa family.

It may be easier to mail me direct at (*)

Many thanks, and regards, Tarewa Rota
