Just a date please - I think too bad to restore!
« on: Sunday 22 April 07 17:06 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Can anyone put a date to this photo?  I'm trying to work out which one is my great grandfather and which is my Great Great Grandfather.  Apologies for the quality - it's actually a scan of a photocopy of the original - now sadly lost.  I think it's in too poor a state for anyone to attempt a restoration but you never know... ;D

Thanks - Jaylay

Thank you all so much - would love to be able to do what you all do!!   Does anyone have any clues as to the possible date?  The (really strange) hairdos and funny bow ties might be a clue!  Not sure what the occasion would have been, but there were several solicitors in the family - so maybe it was a graduation ceremony or something like that?  Or maybe they dressed like that all the time :)

Hi Jaylay  :)

A bit hard without being able to see the whole photo (e.g. the background has been removed, and they may have been cut off at the legs  :o ) but it looks like 1860s, just going by the clothes and hair, formality of the portrait etc.  I'm not sure, though.

As for the clothes, you would have worn your absolute best clobber to a photo session, Sunday best, or even borrowed clothes if you didn't have anything flash yourself.  I've read that some photographers kept a "dressup box" of bits and pieces that could be worn for a portrait!

Cheers
Prue
