HOSGOOD Steps Brixham

I know where HOSGOOD STEPS are in BRIXHAM but does anyone know why they are named and for what reason?

Well... I know it sounds obvious but Hosgood is a surname so it was probably named simply for a person who was from the area.

Yes Hosgood was the name of masons that were in my family  .
I came across this when i was searching for something else in a search engine....

Hello there,

The story goes that George Hosgood (my g. g.grandfather) a builder in Brixham built a house for each for his eleven children. Walter also a mason lived in one of the properties at the top of these steps. Hence the name!

I used to visit the same house when i was a child every summer if it is the same one...
By this time the House belonged to Walters son...

Just logged onto this site  - realise this is two years old. However, Walter Hosgood was my grandfather - would be good to hear from you as we are currently putting together our family tree.

By the way Walter didn't have a son - only daughters (as far as I know) I would be interested to know who you met when you were a child Treebuster.

Also, my mother informs me that Hosgood steps were named after her father and his brother after they had constructed them.

Hi  humber i a hope you r ecieved my p.m just incase you havent  recieved it ?
I  remember my nan telling me that   her uncle one of many builders in the family he lost his life in 1930s  while either repairing a roof or building one and leaving her aunt a widow hi  brother her father was a fisherman and he was also my mothers grandfather he lived with his married daughter and she kept lots of small pets mainly birds and a lovely macaw Parrot and i remember comeing out of the cottage on a summers evening and smelling the lovely sea air and mixture of Jasmine and  honeysuckle such happy memorys.. When i saw that a cottage had been made nto a holiday let i wondered whether this was the same one and the steps that went on and on and such a challenge for the elderly on a hot summers day and i too am tracing the family tree as i discovered some very interesting thing over my 22years family history search...

Just realised where the confusion was we still have the same family Walter senior was the maison/builder he had three sons and  the  FISHERMAN was Henry Walter or Walter Henry nan refered him has granfer harry and the builder was William John who my nan said brought her back to Brixham after henrys daughters were born to look after their mother while there father was away at sea fishing ...

Hi Treebuster,
My grandad was Henry Hosgood (Harry). the lady with the birds etc is my aunt Noreen and my mum is madeline her twin sister. They also had an adopted sister called Joan.

Who is your nan? Mum? what area are you living in? Would be good to share family tree information as we have gone back to Thorverton roots
