WILLIAMSON & HENDERSON, Sanquhar
« on: Thursday 19 April 07 22:44 BST (UK) »
Hello,

I'm looking for a marriage and/or information on the parentage of Catherine (Katherine?) WILLIAMSON, wife of William HENDERSON, which probably took place at Sanquhar, C1810. Catherine's name appears on the death reg'n of 3 of their offspring all of whom were born at Sanquhar between 1812 and 1817. She died before 1823 when William remarried to Jean LITTLE and had another six children.  Catherine is not buried in the parish churchyard.  Any advice or information appreciated.

Diana

Hi Diana

I've been investigating your family but so far I can't find Catherine with that surname.

I downloaded William's death cert of 1861 but it only gives Jean/Jane Little as his wife . This is very unlucky as many Death certs give the names of all spouses  :(

I also note that on the 1851, William was born Glencairn, circa 1782.  The only Catherine/Katherine/alts coming up for there at the approx date was a Kathrin Hairstons. Parents - Charles Hairstons and Janet Copland. This, of course, might well not be her and she may have been born in Sanquhar or elsewhere  :-\  There are 7 Kathrines (alts) coming up for Sanquhar  1780 +/- 10.

Would the name of Catherine and William's children in birth order help. They may have followed the traditional naming conventions:

1st son - after man's father
2n son - after woman's father
1st daughter - after woman's mother
2nd daughter - after man's mother

etc.

Just butting in here if you don't mind. Caught a glimpse of the Williamson name but I don't think there is a personal connection here. Was curious about your above comment. Gadget, can you find the death certificate of my John Willliamson who died 12.11.1877 at Stranraer. This was his second marriage to my gtx2 grandmother Jane Marshall. Was his first wife mentioned by any chance on his death certificate please?

Your Scottish family naming pattern has already been extremely useful. Well worth following up Catherine.

Hello Gadget and thanks for your help in looking for the elusive Catherine Williamson.  I wonder if Wm. and Catherine were in fact properly married, as the OPR does not mention that Wm. was a widow when he married Jean Little in 1823.  Catherine is not mentioned on his death registration or on his headstone.  I did note however that Jean Little's mother was a Williamson - perhaps a connection between them - I will try to pursue that.

Thanks again,

Diana
