1861,1871 census BIRCHELL/BIRCHALL
« on: Sunday 15 April 07 14:32 BST (UK) »
I've recently discovered after a life time searching that my maternal great grandfather Richard BIRCHELL was born in Carrick-on-Shannon in Co Leitrim in Ireland. The information comes from his army record.

In the 1881 census I've come across a Joseph Birchall b in 1837 also in Co Leitrim working as a Cotton Packer in Oldham, Lancs living with wife Ann Birchall at 113 Beech Street Oldham.

Could anyone take a look at earlier 1871.1861 census etc. to see if they can find any sightings on this Joseph Birchall on the mainland and any children or other family.

My Richard Birchell signed up for the Royal Cheshire Militia in Lancashire in 1857 but his previous occupation was cotton worker.

Any assistance, as always, is most appreciated.

Very Best Regards

Hi ART

Bit difficult to say for certain they are the same ones  :-\

1871 census, Manchester [St George's district] - 6 Samuel Street
RG 10/4048 folio 131 pg 24

Joseph Birchall; head; mar; 26; police officer; Ireland
Ann do; wife; mar; 29; winder cotton; Ireland
William do; nephew; 12; roller? cotton; Cheshire, Stockport

If this is him, there are good records available re the Police recruits

I don't see a Joseph Birchall on the records held by Lancashire Records office but if he was based in Manchester you could repost & ask for a lookup on the MLFHS CD of Manchester Police recruits.

Don't know if the William Birchall nephew ties up anywhere?

Also a possible marriage:
Joseph Birchall to Ann Kiloren - Manchester Registry office or attended [ie could be a Catholic marriage] 1865 Q3 vol 8d pg 699

Good luck

On the 1871 census there is a Richard Birchell age 29 born Ireland a soldier living in Rowner, Hampshire (looks like an army base) could this be him? If you PM your email address I will send you the census image. See what you think. It would mean that he joined the Army aged about 13 but that was possible. Do you have any details on where he was living earlier or later in life it may give a clue on where to look.

Dear Sandra.

Thank you for this informationI have no idea if it's the correct one. My eye caught the Co Leitrim place of birth in the 1881 census and it could well be a brother or cousin to my gr grandfather. My great grandfather Richard left the forces and became a police constable but Joseph in 1881 is merely a laborer according to LDS. Is there any sign of him in 1891. Doesn't look like he has any children. so far. I am most grateful to the information on the police force data as I have other relations who were in the police at different times.

Many many thanks.
Very Best Regards

Thank you Margaret. I already have this image. This is my great grandfather just after he returned from India where he lost a first wife and family. Have no idea what became of them. He left for India with the Connaught Rangers in 1860 after signing up in Chester in 1857. His age varies in different records in the Army and he states his father as deceased which may or may not be true. He gave his last occupation before signing up as a Throstle spinner in a cotton mill. The first confirmed sighting is in October 1857 when he joined the forces.

Many thanks

Hi Art,

Regarding Sandra's mention of police.

I have looked on the M&LFHS Index of the Policemen in Manchester 1858 - 1918
There are only two BIRCHALL's - Joseph and Henry, both born in Cheshire
If these are of interest, let me know

Regards Dave

Thank you so much Dave for this information. Both first names are used in the family and if there is further information I'd be most grateful. There are many variations of the Birchell/Birchall/Burchell/Burchall/Burchill name.

Thanking you so much
Very Best Regards

Thank you so much for this information Dave. Looks promising especially as someone has found found that Joseph in the 1891 census. Don't think he survived his training as he's working as a laborer in 1881 and a Packer in 1891. This is most helpful and I'll post any further information that's forthcoming.

Very Best Regards
