DICKSON & GRIERSON families - Mouswald
« on: Friday 13 April 07 15:49 BST (UK) »
I have a Robert Dickson in Tewkesbury Gloucs., who according to 1841 census  was born in Scotland in 1802. According to the non conformist catalogue in the Gloucester Record Office, accessed on line, he was married to an Elizabeth Turlington and they had at least two children  Robert Grenson  b 1833 and James Johnston b1835.

There is an IGI individual record of a marriage between Elizabeth Turlington and a Robert Grierson Dickson in Claines, Worcestershire, on 30 July 1832. Claines is about 20 miles north of Tewkesbury. The pair were nor resident in Claines in the 1841 census. There was an Elizabeth Turlington christened  in Tewkesbury on 14 Sep 1800.

Searching IGI for Robert Grierson Dicksons one comes to a Robert Grierson Dickson born 21 Aug 1802 to James Dickson and Mary Kerr in Mouswald, Dumfries.

Searching RC for Mouswald one finds a number of Dickson families and at least one Grierson.

Would anyone who might be researching Dickson/Grierson be able to confirm or suggest whether  my Robert in Tewkesbury is the Robert Grierson born in Mouswald?  I wonder if the second name Grenson given to the son born in 1833 in Tewkesbury might be a mis-transcription of Grierson?  It would seem a distinct possibility to me.

Thanks in anticipation

Pete,

On the surface I would agree that Robert G Dickson b 1802 is your man. I'm a descendant of one of the Dickson families of Mouswald and have some info on most of the others, in fact have been trying to connect them all.  Robert G doesn't appear in the 1841 Mouswald census nor does any of his siblings as far as I can discern.  The only sibling I have a lead on is one of his sisters, Jean 9 Mar 1816 who married John Boyes in Kirkgunzeon, KBT in 1843. She died there in 1888 and her husband died in Liverpool in 1898.

Of the Dickson MIs I have, I can't pin down one relating to this family so am not sure which Dicksons they belong to yet.  I can find at least 4 James that could fit the bill on your Robert G.'s father. It was a popular name for the Dicksons, everyone had one it seems just like Thomas, David, Robert and John.  PM me if you want more info on the Dickson's of Mouswald and I'll see what I can find.  My Dicksons also have connections to the Griersons of Rockhall and come from nearby Woodside, Mouswald.

Cheers

Hi Mick

Thanks for your post tonight.

You might be interested to hear that within the last couple of days I found the death of Robert Dickson in Tewkesbury on Ancestry and there on the image is Robert Grierson Dickson Q2 1862 Tewkesbury 6a 247 (2 indistinct). This seems to confirms he was the Robert from Mouswald.

It would seem that some of his relatives moved south with or to be with him. I will spend a bit of time over the weekend listing them and the references to them in the hope you may be able to confirm the identity of them.

I've looked at the several James Dicksons and Mary Kerrs in the area and thought that getting back to the next generation might be  rather difficult!

Will get back to you.

Pete

Mick-

Hi there! I realize this is an older thread but I'm just now investigating bits of my Scottish ancestry. I am in need of finding information on James Dickson, born in Dumfries-shire, date unknown, married to a Sarah Edgar (b. 1827), daughter of Walter Edgar (b. 1798). The Dicksons moved to America somewhere in between, but the only other thing I know about James Dickson is that he died in the Battle of Perryville in Kentucky during the American Civil War (1862). Any information on James would be greatly appreciated!!
