Thanks Valda

Step ahead of you on the archives... ;D

Gilbert is total unaware of India...think the name change will be a surprise as well.( will show him ,when the certs arrive etc)

I wonder if Frederick changed it by deed pole...did they do that then? or did he just change it.....he may well have fallen out with his father because he wanted to work the land and not go into the army  ???

I did ask him today about Edward...(Shadrick still gives him the giggles) he says" he has never had a brother called Edward......but if Ted was alive (and he knew everything) he would tell me that as well" ... ;D......eh...eh..OK ....so Edwards his brother.......

I am getting there

Steve

There would be no need to change his surname by deed poll. Even today you can be known by any name you like, you just have to alert all the bureacracy that in future you wish to be known by this name. In Frederick's time that wasn't really an issue. It is possible from around 1881 Frederick began living with his grandfather and not his parents, but even so unless there was some sort of estrangement you wouldn't expect him to revert to his mother's maiden name, especially since there is clearly no question of illegitimacy.

Regards

Valda

Are you still trying to track the Pearce family?  I am related to Gladys Violet Pearce, your Gilbert's sister. Gladys married Arthur Mitchell by fathers brother.  She died young in 1943 when her youngest child was only 8 months old. Gladys married and died in Colgate a small village near Horsham in Sussex.

I am convinced this is the same family as one of Gladys children, my cousin, George Arthur John ( known as John) has told me the Gladys had a sister called Tiny and a brother called Ted.
