DIfferent Views Within Software
« on: Wednesday 11 April 07 17:13 BST (UK) »
Hello

Just a quick query if anyone can clear it up or offer some advice, i am currently using Roots Magic as my genealogy software, the problem i am finding is using the Pedigree view, in that all i can see are the parents for each line of decendants, i have entered in numerous children/marriages for the siblings under the family view but its getting a little difficult to keep track of who belongs where.

Is there a way i can see all the children and marriages in a tree style view, or any software that allows me to view them that way to make it easier follow

many thanks in advance

Andrew

Hi Andrew

Does RootsMagic do "descendent charts", that would show siblings, too.

Basically they are pedigree charts, starting at "the other end"

Yes that's the views i'm struggling with Bob, i would like all that info but in the style you have your pedigree charts, obviously there will have to be extra boxes for the children and who they married  and their children etc, but i imagine thats how a proper family tree should look once completed and printed out ?

or is it  ? :)

cheers

Andrew

Hi Andrew,

Funnily enough, when I created my pedigree charts, I wondered about adding siblings.
I left it for now, as the charts are created automatically from a GEDCOM, and adding siblings would have been creating more work for me (as far as the programming is concerned).

I thought to have it like the sketch below, but then later I thought, the first box in the chain should include all the siblings, with the "star of the show" in bold type ...

Maybe one day, I will have a go at programming it.

Bob

A pedigree chart is exactly that, one persons pedigree, by it's very nature it will not include siblings.

I use Generations and that has the option  when, having created a descendant chart, you can switch it to a waterfall or left to right chart, the latter has the appearance of a pedigree chart, but includes all the siblings. I don't know if Roots Magic has this option.

Yes thats exactly the type of chart i would like to see Bob, the software i'm looking at dose not seem to have that type of feature though.

Just going to check out the recommendation from Jebber of Generations, thanks for the info both :)

Thanks Andrew,

There is a "hand-made"  variation of that idea here, turned counter-clockwise by 90 degrees.
http://www.margulies-chronicles.com/ag/_kennedy/fam-kenn-tree-ag.php

but that was created using HTML for everything, and it took hours.
(just for one tree, and there are five of them, plus 3 variations for each family !!!!)

And although I am very thankful to Tati for finding so many NORTON and CHAMPION ancestors at the weekend, I dread the thought of having to extend the relevant trees .....

Maybe I could think of a way to program that format, too ??  ;D ;D

But in the meantime, just keep looking  ...  there must be a program somewhere,
that will deliver it exactly how how you want it.

You can view a chart, in Rootsmagic, I think like you would want.
  Rm> Reports>Charts>WallCharts

or
Rm>Reports>Charts>BoxCharts> choose Ancestors or Descendants view

or
you can have a full descendancy report (similar to Bobs)
Rm>Reports>Narrative>  choose option Descendancy

if you have a specific query try their help technical board, faq, quite helpful.
I don't have the latest version but apparently there are better chart options in that.
There is also a program called Tree Draw (at cost) which you can have a trial of for free, you could try that?

At the moment I'm thinking of switching to Family historian which also has a free trial, and has better charting (I think).

newbie :)
