Austwick family; Great Heck/Burn/Brayton.
« on: Tuesday 10 April 07 17:51 BST (UK) »
Hi,
I wonder if anyone could help please?
I am looking for baptism, marriage or burials in this area, they don't seem to come up on the IGI and there is nothing under Selby. The people I am looking for are;
Hannah or Ann Austwick c1817, born in Burn Village.
her father, Joseph Austwick born in Heck, c1795, he married Ann who came from Sherburn.
I would be very grateful if anyone can provide information about Joseph, Ann and any other children they had. Hannah Austwick was my Great Great Grandmother she married Joseph Parkin in 1843 at Kingston Upon Hull.
Thanks again,
Kate.

Hi Kate,

I have looked on the IGI & found some baptisms although they may not be the correct ones as Ann/Hannah is not mentioned.

If it is the correct family, at least you know the mother was Ann Shepherd & there was a birth for a Hannah Shepherd at Sherburn in Elmet 20th October 1791.

Hi Guys,
Thanks to you both.
The family you list seems very tempting and merits some further investigation. I know her parents were Joseph and Ann from the marriage documents, in which she is named Hannah. She was remembered in the family stories as Ann. I haven't found any other records that even come close. Hannah and her husband Joseph Parkin lived most of their married life in the Gainsborough district of Lincolnshire, but I would be interested in any Austwick's in the graveyards that might give more clues to the family background.  My only doubt is the year of birth which seems much too early for my Hannah as she didn't marry until 1843 and her youngest child Frank wasn't born until 1858. Perhaps she was one of their children and her records just don't show up?
It has given me plenty of food for thought though and thank you so much for your time, I had almost given up hope on this branch, now I'm motivated again!
Best wishes,
Kate.

Hi again Kate,

I have at last found Joseph & Ann on the 1841 Census (HO107; Piece 1280; Book8) in the township of Burn.  This is the family I found on the IGI.  Joseph Austwick was transcribed as Esepp Hawkstick!!

Joseph   45       Ag Lab
Ann       45       (transcribed as 65)
John      11
William   11
Martin      8
Richard    6
Jane        4
Sarah  4months

I don't know if they are your family, but the ages tie in with the 1851 Census at Burn where Joseph aged 55 born at Heck, Ann aged 55 born at Sherburn & Sarah aged 10 born at Burn.

Hello Kate,

I have recently started to research my family tree and have picked up your enquiry from 2007 about your Great-Great-Grandmother Hannah Austwick.
From what you say, I think my Great-Great-Grandfather Thomas Austwick may have been Hannah's brother. Thomas was born in 1821 at either Burn or Heck or Snaith (depending on which Census you look at) and I believe his parents were Joseph (b. Heck, about 1796) and Ann (b. Sherburn, about 1796).
I cannot trace Hannah, but Thomas's parents Joseph and Ann seem to match up with your details.
Did you manage to find out anything more about the family at that time?  I'd be very interested to know.
I can provide more information about Thomas's family and descendants if you need it.

Kind regards,
Alan.

Richard Austwick (b.1831, Heck and married to Elizabeth Garlick) was the son of John Austwick (b.1794, Heck) and Mary Liddell.
John and Mary were married at Snaith on 28th November 1814.
John Austwick was the son of Thomas Austwick and Hannah Rigg, both born at Heck, but I don't know their birth dates. Thomas and Hannah were married at Snaith on 14th December 1790.
Thomas Austwick was the son of Joseph Austwick (b.1732, Heck) and Ann Cock (b.1734, Snaith).
Joseph and Ann were married at Snaith on 18th October 1754.
This is as far back as my research has taken me so far.
Thomas Austwick and Hannah Rigg also had a son Joseph (b.1797, Heck and brother to John).
Joseph Austwick was my great-great-great grandfather.
Hope this helps you.
Best wishes,
Alan.
