Adobe reader 6.0
« on: Monday 09 April 07 15:55 BST (UK) »
Please could someone help? I had the above programme installed on my pc when I purchased it. A couple of weeks ago I had notification of an update for Adobe download manager. I clicked to install this and got a message saying that there was already a file and either to overwrite it or assign it to another file(I think). I clicked to overwrite it and now I cannot find it at all and the download is not complete.  I don't know if this makes sense to anyone. I am  not familiar with the workings of a pc so any explanation would need to be in simple language. Thankyou.
PS Adobe reader 6.0. no longer appears in my list of programmes when I go into all programmes.

Hi Kesannah

It sounds like it uninstalled your previous version and then crashed.

Adobe Reader is now on 8 release and is free to download. You can get it from:

Hope this helps

Just something worth considering before you download that massive bloatware 'Acrobat Reader'...it's something like a 20MB download and comes with allsorts of junk...

So if you want something light (1.5MB download) that is just as good if not better for PDF stuff, try here...

      http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_intro.php

I dumped Adobe long ago in favour of this programme...it uses virtually no resources whatsoever and it opens instantly without all the Adobe type 'Bells and Whistles'...... ;D

Thankyou both for your reply. i really don't know why I would need Adobe at all. I am not very computer literate and don't really know what Adobe is for.

Hi Kesannah,

now and again you'll find documentation for downloading which is in PDF format i.e the filename ends in .pdf
PDF is just one of many attempts to save files in a format which everybody can read.

This is the main reason why you (may) need Adobe, as it's a PDF reader program.

It's a free program,  BUT ... as Michael says, it's very bloated, and I also recommend and use the free Foxit program.  The documents load extremely fast, and you don't get the annoying pop-up from Adobe asking you constantly whether you want to load the latest updates.

So it is handy to download Foxit when you have a bit of spare time, and then it is simply there, anytime you need to read a PDF document.

The Adobe reader is used by the computer to display documents which have been created and saved as what are often referred to as "pdf" files. It is a relatively common method of ensuring that a document you have created looks as you intended it to look no matter the computer system used to view it. This makes it one of the few document types which can be read and displayed on different types of system (e.g. PC's and Macs)

Version 8 of Adobe can be cumbersome and hog the resources especially on some older machines. The alternative program suggested by Michael is an excellent one and is indeed fast and efficient at what it does.

Thanks for your advice. I have just downloaded Foxitreader. Can you now telme if I need to delete the Adobedownloadmanager, or can I leave it alone. I have selected foxit as my default PDF reader.

Hi kesannah

In order to avoid a potential conflict and to save yourself some disk space you should uninstall Adobe Reader.

Also check in:

Start->Settings->Control Panel and double click on Folder Opitons and click on the Files Types tab.  Scroll down until you get to PDF and make sure that Foxit is listed as the program associated with opening PDF files.

Downside, Thank you for the advice. I have now checked and Foxit is listed as opening my PDF files. I shall now uninstall Adobe and Adobedownload manager. Is it as simple as that? Kesannah
