Hi
One of my relatives is thought to have drowned in crichton loch (according to family history!) He was called peter gardiner and we think he died in 1925. We can not find his death certificate and we think he moved to australia before this. my granny is sure that one of the gardiners died in crichton loch. We are a bit stuck on this one!
anyone got any ideas?

Hi poppymum,
Can you read this again, he moved to Australia before drowning in Crichton Loch. Take your time , type it read it , than input it, does not make a lot of sense at this stage.

ok
he is meant to have moved to australia, then moved back and then been depressed and "accidently" drowned in crichton loch. This is according to my granny. We think she might have got muddled and it was another gardiner who drowned there but we are sure that one definetly did.

Hi poppysmum,
Looked on SP but couldn't find a Peter Gard*ner dying in Midlothian in 1925. There are 2 who died in 1928. Do you know his age, it would help to narrow down the search.
Kind regards,
Alison

A google search brings up this post from Curious Fox...
"I am researching the Gardiner family who lived in carrington in the nineteenth century. Janet gardiner had an illegitimate son, william gardiner c.1861 who married mary henderson (mothers maiden name oliver) in 1884 at carrington. They had at least seven children, one who is believed to have drowned in crichton loch. Their second oldest son, william, (my great-granpa) married christina wilson in peebles, where they remained. George gardiner also stayed in Peebles. Mary henderson died in 1950 at gullane. "
Was this by any chance made by you??
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Caroline
I was afraid it was too good to be true! Ah well....
I've had a good search on SP for Peter's death and nothing within any reasonable parameters is him up to the online closure time period. The family certainly had a Peter though...he's right there age 11 in 1901 with them and his BC is right where you'd expect to find it. I've also exhausted any possible marriages for him in Scotland. Still very much a mystery at this point. The only other possible very long shot was a death of a Peter Gardiner serving in WW 1....would fit within 2 years age wise but no parents are stated. Do you know for certain that he emigrated to Australia? Is there anything to follow up in regards to that?
Best wishes
Jean

Hi Jean
I made a mistake with the date. Peter is supposed to have died in 1913. We know he went to australia because we have a photo postcard of him taken in a studio in sydney. I am also pretty sure that I have found him on the ships passenger list in may 1913 going to Australia. On wednesday I went to the register office in edinburgh and he definetly didn't die in scotland.
On the back of the postcard it says "uncle peter gardiner, died 1913"
I have to assume that he died in australia which is why i can't find any record of his death here. Just because my granny tells us about tis story, doesn't mean it has to be true!
