svchost.exe and slow start up
« on: Friday 06 April 07 09:14 BST (UK) »

Why should svhost.exe suddenly take 5-10 mins to do its business on start up? I managed to get Task Maager up to observe the processes before svhost  took up 100% CPU time.

I only started getting this slow down this week. The only difference is that I've downloaded a new version of RealPlayer (BBC didn't like the old one for some reason) and I've been doing lots more graphics work.

I've had periods before when I've done lots of photo restoration/imaging and it hasn't caused any problems, so my thoughts are with RealPlayer but I can't see why it would cause this.

My Spyware, Anti-virus and Firewall are all up to date, working well  and have not changed.

Any observations welcome.

Thanks

Hiya Gadget,

Real Player could well be your problem...it comes with loads of non-event stuff....

Try uninstalling it TOTALLY from your system and then go here and give 'Real Alternative' a go....

Hi Gadget

If something is eating your processor (mine was taken over by microsoft help running when it should not - a known bug but not fixed) try putting the name into google & you will often get the solution

Thanks Trish

But those aren't the symptoms. The PC runs fine after the start up. No viruses, no Malware. Firewall always on.

I started today before i turned on the modem just to check but it was the same.

I've deleted RealPlayer and am about to re-boot to test if it was that.

I'll report back when I've rebooted.

Much faster that time - pre RealPlayer speeds.

Think that was definitely the problem.

Thanks both  ;D

Hi Gadget.

If your pc starts to perform badly, it may be because of the programs that run at startup, you can check the stuff that starts when you turn on your pc by clicking "Start" then click "Run" then type "msconfig" without the "

Next click the tab at the top named "Startup", that will display all the programs that are running at startup, you can untick the programs that you dont want to run.

To find out what you need and what you dont at startup go here ... http://www.liutilities.com/products/wintaskspro/processlibrary/svchost/

On this site it will tell you if the program is essential to running windows, also it give info like this...

Fix svchost.exe Errors: Free Scan
Remove svchost.exe: Use WinTasks
Boost svchost.exe Performance: Free Scan

Security Risk (0-5): 0
Spyware: No ( Free Spyware Scan )
Virus: No ( Remove svchost.exe )
Trojan: No ( Remove svchost.exe )

You might have progams running like NeroCheck.exe, iTunesHelper.exe, igfxtray.exe, qttask.exe, SC_Acrobat.exe ... ect, you dont really need any of these running so its safe to untick these from your startup list.

Hope this helps.

Colin.
