John Compton - Born Grately 1806
« on: Wednesday 04 April 07 23:16 BST (UK) »
Trying to find more details of a John Compton (a Tailor) who was born/christened at Grately, Hampshire in 1806.
I think he married an Elizabeth (no surname) who I believe was born in Lockerley around 1812.

They moved to Lockerley where he lived with his family at the Post Office.

I cannot find out who his parents were, his wife's surname, when he died etc.

I would be grateful for any help.

Thanks
Kitto, Fitzmaurice, Compton, Margetson

Hi

Re: his parents - see www.familysearch.org  Entry as follows

JOHN COMPTON
Christening:  10 FEB 1805   Grateley, Hampshire

Parents:
Father:  JOHN COMPTON    Mother:  ELIZABETH

Re: wife's maiden name.  I notice from the 1841 census that the 2 youngest children at that time were born after 1837.  A copy of one of the birth certs will give you Elizabeth's maiden name.  The following were on freebmd    see  freebmd.rootsweb.com

Sep quarter 1838

Compton  Sarah    Romsey &   Volume 7 Page 146

March quarter 1841

Compton  John Berkley    Romsey  &  Volume 7 Page 165

Re: his death

The 1861 shows Elizabeth as a widow and youngest child is Frederick aged 6.  John must have died between Frederick's conception and 1861.  Frederick was christened 18.10.1854 according to the IGI

Deaths for that period do not show the age on the index so it may be difficult to be certain you have the right one.  However - as the childrens births were registered in Romsey - this may be a possibility

Per freebmd  Deaths Mar quarter 1858

There is a marriage for a John COMPTON to Elizabeth CARTER 10th November 1834 at St Mary, Portsea.

It doesn't seem like the right area though. ???

Thank you everyone for your help - you have given me something to go on now.  It gets confusing when all the names are the same.  I will have a look at all the things you suggest.

Hello Freddy
I don't think we have ever had any contact, and I have not looked at RootsChat for some years. I have not looked at the Compton family tree due to family commitments. John Compton was my 2x Gt Grandfather, bpt 10th Feb 1805, at Grateley. I realise you have had years to probably finalise your tree. Sandra(Australia), and I have been in touch for several years, but I have not heard from Susan, or others that I had contact with. I imagine by now you have had photos of people and places involved, such as the Post Office etc., which I visited along with Grateley, Chitterne, Urchfont, Amport etc.
I am not at all sure where you fit in, so would love to know.
Kind regards
Jill Wrighton, nee Compton

Hi Jill

Just to confuse things !  I am Freddy who put out the origina request on Rootschat !!  It was some years ago and I was nervous about putting my real name !

I am Susan, and John Compton was my 2nd Great Uncle.  My line from the Comptons is from Thomas Allen Compton, my Great Grandfather.

I too have been in touch with Sandra over the years and she has put in a lot of work.  I am afraid I haven't done much updating of my tree for a long time.  I have been working on other people's family trees but haven't looked at mine.

Up until four years ago, I lived in Hampshire and visited Lockerly etc.

I have found another relative called Anne - her grandmother Alice Compton was sister to my Compton grandmother.  I have a Word document with details and photos which I sent her - you might find it interesting but I am not sure how to send it to you.

Where do you liive?

Regards
Susan (nee Kitto) Fitzmaurice

Hi Susan
We have had contact in the past - many years ago. I live in Horsham, West Sussex. My father was Frederick Aubrey Compton, bn 1910 Petersfield, son of Allen Aubrey bn Porton, Wilts in 1882.
I know I have Annie Mildred Compton, Gordon Kitto & Phillip Kitto in my tree, so would be grateful for any other details you have. I also visited Lockerley, Amport, Chitterne, Grateley etc, some years ago.
I am not sure how large your "word document" is, but can it be done as an attachment?
Like you I got involved with doing other family names, and for friends, plus family commitments, so the Compton tree has been much ignored in recent times.  I see that Claudia Boorman has put  updated details on this year - www.boormanfamily.ca/trees/compton     -  it's good to hear from you again
Regards Jill
