Hi Paula,

I contacted the Sussex board on the off-chance because all of the Hands side ofmy family appear to have come from there.  But, inexplicably,  my ggrandfather moved to Durham for what I had come to believe was a brief period - my grandfather was born there.  It now seems that he may have gone for longer and  married  a local girl. I am exploring that possibility, too, but haven't had any luck so far.

Many thanks for your patience and interest.

Pam

1861 RG9 3768 F36 p1 Hillfield Bishop Wearmouth
William Hands Hd 26 paper maker b ??chling?? Sussex
Mary Ann 24 b Pelton Durham
William 2 b Deptford Durham
Henry 1 month       "
Looks as if the first Henry died.
There is a stroke in ??chling which goes right through the word - could be Ashling.   Not sure where that is though - not a Sussex village that I know but I see it clearly says that in 1891 when they are in Kent.

Hi,
Just seem your post re: William and Mary Hands. I see they have a young son William aged 2. I am looking for my Great granddad. That could be him, do you have any later info on the family? He was William Phillip Hands born in Durham. He married Alice Marchant ( I think, I may be chasing the wrong story) and had several children Alice, who married my Granddad Frederick Farrell from Hertfordshire, Mary who married Andrew, and George, don't know his wife's name, I think there may have been another child. Williams' first wife died after becoming ill in South Africa, he returned to Durham and re married having another daughter called May, do you think there is a link?

I don't have a lot of info re William.    He was my grandfather's elder brother and the last we hear of him is in the 1871 Census when he was 12 years old and where it says he was born in bishopswearmouth, durham.   At that time they were living in Heworth, Durham.   His siblings were Joseph, Henry (my grandfather) Mary and Margaret.   Another daughter, Elizabeth, was born 7 years later.   He doesn't figure in the 1881 Census when he had probably already left home.   For further info you might consult Ancestry.com-
Good luck with your research and contact me again if you need more info.
