Religion will certainly matter when you start to look for church records in Ireland and also burial places (although bear in mind that certain old burying grounds would have had mixed burials and Presbyterians may be buried in Church of Ireland graveyards). Also, registration for Protestant marriages began in 1845 and it was 1864 for Catholic marriages.

Sometimes in a mixed marriage the children will be raised different religions, i.e. if father was Catholic and mother was Church of Ireland the sons might be raised Catholic and daughters Church of Ireland.
You'll probably just have to work your way back and keep an open mind about which church records to check.

I think your right
although it is usually the bride who changed her religon and followed the husband
I think in this case its the men who
followed their wifes
thanks again I will check out all possibilities

I'm wondering how the brides in your family managed to change their religion so easily, elaine. On several occasions when speaking to Niftyfifty she has told me Catholic brides usually usually had to see the priest,
who had to contact the Bishop and a letter of approval had to come from the Pope if they wanted to marry Protestants. In a great many instances Catholic men and women were cut off by their families if they married
a Protestant and the same happened in Protestant families.

Thats what I thought to Christopher thats why I am so confused it seems to be the catholic men who became protestants
The marriage certificates I have found all say the free church on them
