Irish doctors
« on: Friday 30 March 07 12:06 BST (UK) »
From my great aunts death cert it appears her father, my great grandfather, was a "Doctor of Medicine". I have very few details of him but believe that he would have qualified circa 1870 in Ireland.
Does anyone know which medical schools were operating in Ireland at that time?

Tim

Irish doctors in our family went to medical school in Edinburgh. Are you sure he had his medical training in Ireland or did he just practise in Ireland?
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I've searched through the Scottish census without luck ( admittedly he could have started and qualified between census years )
If my information is correct he would have been in practice in the Straits Settlements - hence the difficulties I am having in finding him and his son ???

Mo, many thanks for the links, after I have got responses to my follow up enquiries I shall contact them.

Tim

YOu could try checking the Trinity College Alumni list too though he may be a little late. I think the book ends in 1868.

Do you know where he practised? You could check the local directories.

Kate,
There's the problem, assuming my information is correct, it's come from a convent who have stated that they didn't keep records at that time  ???, he was practicing in the Straits Settlements, Malacca in 1882. possibly Penang earlier.
I am tempted to get the "Medical Directory 1898" from Archive CD books to try and sort the problem out but I'll have to wait a while because of various certs I've ordered and a search for a military record  ;)

Hello Tim,

Whereabouts in Ireland did your great grandfather live? He may have attended the Belfast Medical School which was founded in 1835 and transferred to the Queen's College, Belfast in 1847. The College became the Queen's University, Belfast in 1908.

Hi Tim,

My great-grandfather, also a doctor, was practising in Armagh around the same time as yours. He trained at Glasgow University, and did additional studies (midwifery) at Trinity College, Dublin. Glasgow keep good records- hope you find what you're looking for.
