BT Archives in Old Holborn
« on: Thursday 29 March 07 20:07 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find out when my g.grandparents lived in Dublin and have worked out from trade directories and censuses that they must have been there between 1891 and 1895 or between 1898 and 1905.  I have not managed to trace them on any census in 1901.

This is a business card from when they were in Dublin.

BT Archives are at Holborn Telephone Exchange, 268-278 High Holborn and are open to the public on Tuesdays and Thursdays between 10.00 and 4.00 p.m.  They have told me that they hold telephone directories for Southern Ireland up to 1916 in cassette form but these have to be examined in person as they don't do a look up service.

As I live in Lancashire I was hoping that there might be some kind soul out there who could check these records on my behalf.

There is absolutely no sense of urgency in this - I've been trying to find the information for at least five years.   :-*

The BT phone books are available on line at ancestry.
I've had a look and the earliest A Catlow based in Ireland was in the 1908 book. Unfortunately the image won't  load, to confirm. I'll try loading it later.

Hi Queenwillow,

Thank you for trying but I've tried the Ancestry phone directories without success.  The 1908 A Catlow you kindly found for me is based in Blackburn.  My lot were in business in Blackpool between 1904 and 1909.  Prior to that they were in Blackburn until 1891 and in Lytham, Lancs., between 1895 and 1898.  (From trade directories and the 1891 census).

I just can't find them at all between 1891 and 1895 or 1898 and 1904.  :'(

Hi, I have just joined rootschat because I googled Catlow and your post came up. I am researching my wife’s side of the family and Arthur Catlow is her 2nd great gf. We live in Blackpool and I see you’re not far away in Kirkham. Do you have a tree on Ancestry? If so, perhaps we could share information.

Sorry, I'm not into online trees there are too many errors in the trees of others but I'm happy to share information.   Arthur Catlow was my g.gt grandfather and I have the Catlows back to a marriage of John Catlow and Betty Cock in Colne in 1784. I am also in touch with two other Catlow descendants, one in the US (whom I have met) and another in I think, Bury.

It's been a long time since I've been on Rootschat and I'm having some difficulty with a different web layout!

Yes I have some dubious links on Ancestry. I have records of John C & Betty Cock and possible parents of John - also John 1755-1823 married to Margaret Armistead in 1784 but I need to verify these. Also a possible photo of Arthur and a family pic.
Is it safe to swap email addresses on here?

The usual advice is to use the personal message system and swap email addresses that way.
