Bishop Auckland Parish Records
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 23:10 BST (UK) »
Ive been researching my great grandfather, born here in 1857.
Would the church/parish records have more information to his grandparents on baptism records?
Does anyone know if St.Mary's and St.Wilfrieds might of shared baptism records?
                          Thank You

Hi Jim

Welcome to Rootschat.

You won't find information re grandparents on baptism records.  The record would only give the parents names.

To find grandparents you would have to trace back each generation.

If you post the name, date and area perhaps someone on Rootschat will be able to help you.

Regards ... Sheila

Sheila;
Thank You for your reply. My great grandparents were William Barnwell and Margaret MacNamee or McNamee/Mcnamee ,diferent spellings on three county birth certificates.
William and Margaret's first son was born in Bishop Auckland in 1852.I have the county certificates for the first three children and have ordered the certificates for the other four children.
William and Margaret were from Ireland.I am trying to find out from what county, and when they emmigrated to England.
I am not sure how to proceed farther back.
I have been hoping Church records would have more details.
My Great grandfather immigrated to the U.S. November 12/13,1890.aboard the Lord Gough from Liverpool or Manchester.
I have been told that to find either William or Margaret in Ireland I need to know the county and church parish.Which seems like looking for needle in a haystack.
                       Thank You!

Hi
Census records will be your best bet to find out where they were born.  Often they just say Ireland but with luck you might get a county. The 1881 is free to search on www.familysearch.org or www.ancestry.co.uk    The latter also have all the other census years, as do other sites, but you have to pay a subscription.   It does not seem to be working at the moment but I am sure someone will look for you later.    Names and ages of the children would help as they may be easier to find than the parents.
If the parents married in England then the certificate will give a father's name for each of them which might help.    BMDs are free to search on ancestry too.

Jim

Is this your family in 1881?

RG11/4914 Folio 7 Page 7
No. 41 Blue Row, Bishop Auckland

Margt Barnwell 52, Widow, b Ireland
James 24, Coal Miner, b Bishop Auckland
Margaret 18, b Bishop Auckland
William 17, Coal Miner, b Bishop Auckland
Edward 15, Errand Boy, b Bishop Auckland
Frank 12, b Bishop Auckland

If so, in 1891 Margaret and William Jnr are still living at Blue Row and she gives her birthplace as Monaghan, Ireland.

William Snr appears to have died between 1871 & 1881.

Hope this helps.

Sheila;
Yes, that is them on the 1881 Census.William and Margaret ary my Great great grandparents.....
I have seen census for 1861,1871,1881,1891 and 1901- but only for William and Margaret, and then Margaret as a widow, and for their oldest son John and his family.
William died March 1880.Margaret passed away in 1910.
I have compared the census with freebmd which is interesting.Still I dont know if others are William's brothers and sisters?, or if they were anywhere else in England before July 1852.
Here in the states we read that in researching family history,"non conformist" records are supposed to be difficult to obtain-or not to exist.
It is interesting how the dates on freebmd do not match County records......
Thank You again for your help.
                          Jim

P.S. My family used names over and over again, brothers, sisters, parents, aunts and uncles, which can be confusing!

Hi Jim

It is difficult researching in Ireland, you really do need a birth county and parish.  I am having the same problem with my Burke and Holmes line.  Neither have given a birth county on any census, only Ireland.

I cannot see either of them on the 1851 England census, neither can I see a marriage during 1850/1/2.  As you have the birth county of Monaghan for Margaret it may be worth trying to find a marriage there prior to them coming to England.

I can only suggest that you post a request for a marriage lookup on the Ireland, Monaghan board.  You never know you just may get lucky.

Good luck with your search.

Best wishes ... Sheila
