Marriage Weir/Green? ... baptism?
« on: Wednesday 28 March 07 08:08 BST (UK) »
A long shot here, but I was wondering if anyone can find a marriage for me please?

Thomas Weir (b Sligo about 1811) and Elizabeth/Bridget Green (b Sligo about 1816).

They had a daughter Mary born in Sligo in 1833. This appears to be their first and only child born in Sligo (according to census). I do not have an exact birth date or place for Mary if anyone is able to find her.

By 1835 they were in Scotland having more children.

I'm afraid I have no idea where they were from - census just say Sligo. Mary went on to marry in the Church of Scotland.

Thanks for any help.

Hello Ruskie,

There are three items you require when searching for Irish ancestors.

1. Denomination.
2. Parish
3. Townland.

You seem to have the denomination but the parish and townland would make it easier to find the Church which the Green and Weir families attended in Ireland.

You'll have to rely on Church records as civil registration in Ireland was not introduced until 1864. Non Catholic marriages were registered from 1845 onwards. When registration for BDMS started in 1864 some people didn't bother with the registration for a few years after that date. Keep your fingers crossed that church records still exist.

Thanks for the suggestions Christopher.

Unfortunately if the only clue I have about the families origins is via Scottish censuses and all they say is Sligo, so I don't really have much to go on. I know a lot of us with Irish roots are in the same boat.

Since posting my original question, I have discovered the names of Thomas Weir's parents: Thomas Weir (farmer) and Isabella Dow. Elizabeth/Bridget Green's parents are James Green (portioner) and Mary surname unknown.

I have thought about the fact that the surnames Weir, Green, and Dow don't appear to be typical of, or specific to Ireland, and wonder if the families origins are elsewhere?

Thanks again.

Thanks CED, but it's clearly Green on both her marriage and death certificates.  :-\
