Hello Kate

I've been on holiday so I have just seen your request.

There are lots of Charles and Chas Johnsons in 1839 directory.  To save me typing them all Can you give me a clue on his occupation or the area he was in

hi thanks for looking i really don't know too much only waht i have from a son  charles johnson his father is suppose to be Charles johnson occupation given as a miner on his death certificate .  He notes several times that he's from commercial road london, or just london, which isn't much help. Charles Jnr johnson named his first son Charles frederick johnson so there might be something in that.  If you don't mind could  you list any miner's  or any Charles johnson living at commercial road ,and if not pushing the friendship Any Charles frederick's

thankyou so very much for looking for me.

Hi Kate

I'm sorry but Pigots 1839 only includes tradespeople and miners would not be included.

I am rather surprised to find a miner living in Commercial Road.  There are 4 Commercial Roads listed in 1888 A-Z of London and none of them would be anywhere near any mines.

When did Charles senior live in Commercial Road?  Does it give an area of London.  Do you have him in any census.  Perhaps he was a miner somewhere else and only moved to London when he was old.  Can you give more information.

I have attached a copy of the Charles Johnsons in Pigots.  Just noticed the Coal Factors.  Perhaps he had something to do with that.  I don't know where the Coal Exchange was I'm afraid.

Sylviaann

These are about the coal exchange.

Thanks for the listings ,

Idon't know  a great deal which isn't much help,

My charles Johnson was born abt 1832-died 1897 in nsw australia. on his death certificate it is stated his father was Charles Johnson a miner, On Charles johnson jnr marriage certificate and birth of his children he states he is of Commerical rd London, no mother's name is listed on his death so it doesn't help the situation,  He apparently arrived in australia in abt 1848 which i have been attempting to figureout.  He married 1855 in st peters church east maitland nsw australia.  His nsw marriage stated nothing of parents i'm about to write to the church to see if they have further information.  Yes i thought it abit weird a miner in Commercial rd ,london I'm thinking his father may of come out he too, this may of been when he become a miner.  If you don't mind are there any johnson's listed in a commerical rd London on your directory. Just in case his death cert is incorrect.

Thanks once again for your help

Johnsons in Commercial Road

Henry Cabinet maker
Samuel leather seller
William & Son Cabinet makers and house agents
William Whittle & Robert  Whitelead manufacturers
Charles Johnston surgeon

Sorry not much help.

Have you found your Charles in 1841?  I know it is a common name but someone may be able to find him.  I can't help there I'm afraid but you could put in a request for a lookup

Good luck
